SUMMARY:Woodshop Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. Learn more about becoming a member here! \nEmail us at ava@seattlereconomy.org if you have any questions on Woodshop usage. Please come to the East entrance of the NE Seattle Tool Library at the time of the class. When you arrive through that entrance\, the Wookshop is through the door in the left corner of the space. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nMuch of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible. All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. The all-gender restroom is quite small and not ADA compliant.\nNon-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events\, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.\nPlease contact us with any accessibility notes or requests.\n\nGETTING THERE: \n\nBy transit: Served by King County Metro bus route 372 stopping along Lake City Way NE at NE 98th St. Route 61 stops at NE Northgate Way & 23rd Ave NE and is a ½ mile walk from the tool library.\nBy bike: There are multiple bicycle route options available to the tool library\, and you are welcome to stow your bicycle inside the tool library during your visit.\nCar parking: There is a gravel parking lot that fits about 10 cars\, and an asphalt parking lot that fits 5 cars. DESCRIPTION:Learn sewing machine basics\, stitches\, threading\, tension\, best practices\, and more! Leave with a sampler\, PDF guide and confidence.\n\n\nStudents will leave this class with the foundation for utilizing a standard home sewing machine. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things. Joslyn learned to sew in Home Ec (economics) class in high school back when they taught such a thing.. the 1970s! She’s stock piled more fabric than she’ll ever be able to use; fabric stores are one of her happy places! \nThis class is a part of our Fabrics and Fibers Skill Series\, which includes 12 classes and 1 event that hope to give you the opportunity to learn a variety of textile-based skills. DESCRIPTION:Sign up for some time in our Woodshop! Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may learn more about the Woodshop here and sign up for Woodshop Orientations here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. If a Steward is available\, they will get back to you confirming one of the requested times.  \nWe also recommend filling out our Class & Event Notification Registration form and checking “Woodshop Open Hours (Woodshop Orientation Required)” to be notified when we post a Woodshop Open Hours next. \nIf a time within a currently listed Woodshop Open Hours works\, but you cannot make it within the first 5 minutes of its start time\, please email ava@seattlereconomy.org\, and we can try to work with your availability. Please make sure to check that there is an open spot and include the date/time of the instance in your email. \nCost & Donations: \nWe charge a $15 access fee to the shop and recommend a donation of $15 per hour of usage. Your donations help keep our Woodshop open. You can pay for any additional time via a QR code once you’ve completed your time in the shop. \nSafety & Supervision: \nAll shop time is supervised. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs
DESCRIPTION:This is a hands-on introduction to drills and drivers\, covering parts\, bits\, fasteners\, and safety. Safety glasses needed. Women+ space.\n\n\nThis class is geared toward absolute beginners or those who have very little experience using electric drills or impact drivers. \nAttendees will learn about drill and driver anatomy\, how to choose the correct drill or driver bit\, and choose the right fastener for common projects while emphasizing safety and workspace set up. There will be a hands-on part of this class\, where students will have a chance to handle these tools and practice drilling and driving into different materials. Students will also be introduced to drill guides and drill presses. Students are required to bring their own safety glasses. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. If this class isn’t the right fit for you\, we also offer many workshops that are open to everyone. She’s an avid user of tools and has taught classes on a variety of subjects to children\, college students\, and adults.
