SUMMARY:Laser Cutter Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use the laser cutter in the NE Seattle Tool Library Woodshop! This class is required to use our in-house xTool M1 laser cutter.\n\n\nOpen up endless creative possibilities with laser cutting! In this class\, students will learn how to navigate the xTool Studio software to set up their designs and operate the xTool M1 laser cutter. The laser is able to cut and engrave a wide variety of materials\, like wood\, paper\, opaque acrylic\, and fabric. No previous experience is required. \nTaking the Laser Cutter Orientation is required to use our in-house laser cutter. You must also be a Seattle REconomy tool library member (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) to take this class. Become a member here! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. Bring your textiles or craft supplies (or use our sewing supplies)\, and get to know your community!\n\n\nGot a collection of hole-filled socks you can’t get rid of? Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? We plan to host it on the second weekend of each month: the second Sunday at the NE Seattle Tool Library and the second Saturday at the Shoreline Tool Library! \nACCESSIBILITY:  \n\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. SUMMARY:Introduction to Fabric Types and Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Learn to identify fibers\, select materials\, care for fabrics\, and test your new skills with hands-on fabric exploration. No experience need.\n\n\nDuring the first part of class\, students will learn about the different types of textiles they may encounter. This includes how to recognize fiber and structure\, how to select the right material for a project\, and care basics. During the second part of class\, students will put theory into practice\, using multiple senses to identify mystery pieces of fabric and plan projects. \nWho is this class for? Sewers\, thrifters\, crafters\, fiber folk\, and anyone who wants to know more about soft materials. No experience necessary. \nAbout the instructor\, Amelia Roberts: Amelia has a textile degree and experience as a sewer\, weaver\, craft educator\, and art history enthusiast\, all of which influences her understanding of fabrics. She loves tinkering with textiles and has been teaching sewing and fiber crafts to adults for over ten years. \nThis class is a part of our Fabrics and Fibers Skill Series\, which includes 12 classes and 1 event that hope to give you the opportunity to learn a variety of textile-based skills.
