SUMMARY:Intro to English Paper Pieced Quilting
DESCRIPTION:Make a quilted flower by hand with English Paper Piecing. Create at least one and take home a travel kit to keep sewing on the go.\n\n\nStudents will create their own quilted hexagonal flower garden using the English Paper Piecing method in this beginner-friendly class. This scrap-basting quilting technique is done entirely by hand\, making it the ultimate portable craft. Using pre-cut paper shapes\, fabric is wrapped around and basted\, then hand-stitched together to create precise designs before the paper is removed. \nThere will be a number of scrap fabrics to choose from\, assuring each hexie flower is as unique as its creator! Students will create at least one flower in class\, ready to use on its own or expand into a larger piece and leave with a travel kit to keep quilting on the go. \nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Benson: Sarah Benson is a broom maker and fiber artist based in Shoreline\, WA. She has a background in fiber arts and printmaking and received her BFA from Arizona State University. Dedicated to a life of creating\, learning\, and skill sharing\, she began focusing on traditional handcrafts in earnest while homesteading in the San Juan Islands. When not creating\, she is busy running after her rambunctious toddler. \nThis class is a part of our Fabrics and Fibers Skill Series\, which includes 12 classes and 1 event that hope to give you the opportunity to learn a variety of textile-based skills. If you sign up for and attend one of the classes/events in this series\, you’ll get a token for 10% off your next purchase at Seattle ReCreative to help you continue your creative journey! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. The restroom is ADA compliant.\nNon-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events\, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.\nPlease contact us with any accessibility notes or requests.\n\nGETTING THERE: \n\nBy transit: Served by King County Metro bus Rapid Ride E Line on Aurora Ave N and N 165th.\nBy bike: The venue is located one block west of the Interurban Trail. Shoreline Light Rail stations are each about 2 miles away. A bicycle rack is available outside the building.\nCar parking: There is an asphalt parking lot that fits up to 20 cars. There is one ADA van accessible parking space with an access aisle.\n\nChildren are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis\, either as a student or as an observer. DESCRIPTION:Sign up for some time in our Woodshop! Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. If a Steward is available\, they will get back to you confirming one of the requested times. \nWe also recommend filling out our Class & Event Notification Registration form and checking “Woodshop Open Hours (Woodshop Orientation Required)” to be notified when we post a Woodshop Open Hours next. \nIf a time within a currently listed Woodshop Open Hours works\, but you cannot make it within the first 5 minutes of its start time\, please email info@seattlereconomy.org\, and we can try to work with your availability. Please make sure to check that there is an open spot and include the date/time of the instance in your email. \nCost & Donations: \nWe charge a $15 access fee to the shop and recommend a donation of $15 per hour of usage. Your donations help keep our Woodshop open. You can pay for any additional time via a QR code once you’ve completed your time in the shop. \nSafety & Supervision: \nAll shop time is supervised. Our instructor and Woodshop Steward volunteers will help you use tools safely.
