SUMMARY:Learn to Make a Braided Wool Candy Cane @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Use some of the basic skills required to make a braided wool rug to create a candy cane instead! All materials provided for one candy cane.\n\n\nLearn to make a very simple braided wool candy cane that incorporates a few of the basic skills and terminology involved in making a round braided rug. In about 15 minutes\, with materials that have been prepared and are ready to braid\, you can create an attractive and soft holiday decoration or gift. \nMaterials are from a variety of repurposed wool garments in white\, green\, red\, and some plaids. Materials for one candy cane will be provided with the class fee. Additional materials may be purchased from the instructor during class\, with fees supporting a donation to the Edmonds Food Bank. \nAbout the instructor\, Margaret Elwood: Margaret has been making braided rugs for decades and has been teaching for 5 years. She recently taught a popular braided wool rug class at the Shoreline Tool Library. SUMMARY:Learn How to Knit (Optional 2-Part Class) @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of knitting so you can start you first project and get hands-on support in the second session. Some materials required.\n\n\nThis two-session class will give you the skills and confidence to start your first knitting project. \nThe first session (11/7) will cover the basic steps of knitting. This includes the tools you need\, casting on stitches\, making both knit and purl stitches\, and binding off stitches. The first session will include a discussion of beginner projects\, how to read a pattern\, and how to pick out materials for a project. The focus of the first session is on practicing the skills rather than starting a project. \nThe second session (11/14) will be optional and structured more like office hours. Students can come and work on projects together\, and the instructor will be on hand to provide support. This could include working on an in-progress project\, getting help applying the skills from the first class to a specific project\, or picking out the pattern for a first project. \nStudents need to bring: Students need to bring: Two double-pointed needles size 7-9 and worsted-weight (medium-thick) yarn. Note that if students already have other needle sizes and yarn weights\, they will work and buying more is not necessary. \nBelow are the dates for each part of the class. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the basic supplies and tools of needle felting (AKA roving)\, while creating a felted acorn to decorate your home this winter.\n\n\nIn this class\, you will learn the basics of needle felting with wool. This will include an overview of setup\, materials\, and tools\, along with some tips and tricks to make getting started easier. Students will quickly get into trying out the needle felting by making a simple felted acorn\, a lovely little holiday ornament. \nHand dexterity is the primary mobility consideration\, due the requirement of repetitive and precise movements. Please be aware that in working with needles\, you may poke yourself in the process of learning. Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? We plan to host it on the second weekend of each month: The second Saturday at the Shoreline Tool Library and the second Sunday at Reuse Commons Lake City (new location!)! Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Some materials & basic sewing skills required.\n\n\nPerfect for the holidays\, either for you to use or to give as a gift. Learn how to transform simple squares of fabric into beautifully finished cloth napkins or gift wrapping cloths with even hems and mitered corners. \nWhile this is a beginner class\, the instructor requires that students can already sew a straight line\, backstitch\, and understand basic sewing machine terminology. \nMaterials Required: Prior to class\, each student should decide if they plan to make either wrapping cloths or cloth napkins. There are general materials requirements\, along with ones specific to what you plan on creating. \nAll students must bring: \n\nNON-STRETCH woven fabric\, measuring at least 18×18” inches per napkin or 16×16” per wrap\, washed and dried. (Example: 1 ¼ yard of continuous fabric will make four 18×18” hemmed cloths. SUMMARY:Sol Collage with Salvation Artists Collective @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Get creative as you make a collage using upcycled materials. If you sign up for multiple classes\, you'll build a deck of Sol Collage cards.\n\n\nAn instructor with Salvation Art Collective\, a Reuse Commons partner\, will guide you to make a collage using upcycled materials in a warm and inviting space that encourages connection\, conversation\, and creativity. \nThis is a recurring class\, and returning attendees will get the opportunity to build a deck of Sol Collage cards. You must sign up for each instance you plan on attending. \nAbout the instructor\, Rachel Lynette: Rachel is a lifelong teacher\, first with children\, then with adults\, and always with an eye toward what makes people light up. A natural creative explorer\, she gravitates toward any process that surprises her\, and SolCollage does exactly that. There’s something almost magical about the way seemingly unrelated images come together to create something meaningful. Her workshops are relaxed\, playful\, and judgment-free. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy or our hosting partners at Reuse Commons Lake City. Bring your textiles or craft supplies (or use our sewing supplies)\, and get to know your community!\n\n\nGot a collection of hole-filled socks you can’t get rid of? Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? We plan to host it on the second weekend of each month: the second Sunday at the NE Seattle Tool Library and the second Saturday at the Shoreline Tool Library! \nACCESSIBILITY:  \n\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. SUMMARY:Learn Machine Sewing and Make a Potholder @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of machine sewing and go home with your very own handmade potholder! No sewing skills are required.\n\n\nSomeone on your holiday gift list surely needs a potholder made by you. This is a special Machine Sewing 101 class where you’ll learn basic machine sewing skills\, and you’ll also make a potholder. This will be a beginner-friendly class to learn the basics of machine sewing where you get the opportunity to make a potholder and take it home. \nNo previous sewing machine experience is required. All tools and supplies will be provided by Seattle REconomy. \nAbout the instructor\, Ava: Former Shoreline Tool Library Coordinator Ava Lim learned sewing from her mother\, who was a sewing instructor. Ava then moved on to teaching classes herself at the makerspaces at the University of Washington.
