DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use the laser cutter in the NE Seattle Tool Library Woodshop! This class is required to use our in-house xTool M1 laser cutter.\n\n\nOpen up endless creative possibilities with laser cutting! In this class\, students will learn how to navigate the xTool Studio software to set up their designs and operate the xTool M1 laser cutter. The laser is able to cut and engrave a wide variety of materials\, like wood\, paper\, opaque acrylic\, and fabric. No previous experience is required. \nTaking the Laser Cutter Orientation is required to use our in-house laser cutter. You must also be a Seattle REconomy tool library member (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) to take this class. Become a member here! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? DESCRIPTION:Bring your bike to class with you and learn how to repair a flat tire\, from start to finish\, in this beginner-friendly class. Women+ space.\n\n\nAre you interested in learning how to repair a flat tire\, an essential skill for all cyclists? Our beginner-friendly Fix-A-Flat class will teach you everything from removing the tire\, to patching the tube\, to pumping the tire back up and making sure it’s safe to get back on your bike. \nNo experience needed\, and you’ll leave the class with the skills to handle flat tires confidently. This class applies to tires with innertubes (i.e. not “tubeless”). Students should bring a bicycle to the class. \nAbout the instructor\, Nancy Helm: Nancy is an avid cyclist with a passion for teaching others not only how to ride a bicycle\, but also how to maintain and repair their bicycles. She brings to this class over ten years teaching basic bicycle maintenance at Cascade Bicycle Club\, including four years teaching women and non-binary classes. She’s also taught “How to Buy a Used Bicycle” at the Shoreline Tool Library. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Jennifer Yasis and Cinthia Marisol: Jen has been sewing for years\, from simple garments\, quilts\, bags\, pillows and accessories from patterns or reconstructing what she sees. She enjoys sharing what she’s learned to help others build confidence in their skills in a supportive\, encouraging environment. Cinthia Marisol\, (they/elle)\, is a two spirit queer writer and interdisciplinary artist. DESCRIPTION:Over two classes\, you'll gain hands-on experience that will teach you drywall patch and paint repair skills. Wear paint-friendly clothes!\n\n\nIn this two-session class\, you’ll learn the basics of repairing holes in walls and ceilings. From tiny patches to larger teardowns\, a few simple tools and some inexpensive products make it easy to fix patches so that you can’t even see where it was fixed. \nThis is a hands-on class\, where you’ll get a chance to practice the skills in a safe environment. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. The second session will be outside in a covered balcony space\, so please dress appropriately. \nPlease be sure you can make it to both of the class periods (listed below) and register only for the first date listed (July 12th): \n\nSession One: Sunday\, July 12th\, from 11am–12:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City\nSession Two: Sunday\, July 19th\, from 12–1pm at Reuse Commons Lake City\n\nAbout the instructor\, Afton Lewis: Afton has a professional background in restoration painting and drywalling. This includes how to recognize fiber and structure\, how to select the right material for a project\, and care basics. During the second part of class\, students will put theory into practice\, using multiple senses to identify mystery pieces of fabric and plan projects. \nWho is this class for? Sewers\, thrifters\, crafters\, fiber folk\, and anyone who wants to know more about soft materials. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. Students will design a simple symbol\, image\, or motif and print it onto fabric to create custom patches and decorative elements for future projects. Topics include image design\, positive and negative space\, carving techniques\, fabric inks\, and printing on cloth. \nStudents should bring: Sketches\, symbols\, images for inspiration\, and an apron or old shirt if desired. \nThis class is part of an optional five-part series\, titled “Wear Your Story: A Battle Jacket Workshop Series with Salvation Artists Collective“. Materials required.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Katie McFarland: I came to upcycling the old-fashioned way: because I had to. A punk since 1983\, I’ve spent a lifetime rescuing\, repairing\, remixing\, and reimagining discarded materials. I’ve made clothes from thrift-store finds\, patched garments until they became works of art\, block-printed fabric\, and turned scraps into something worth keeping. When my kids were young\, I dumpster-dived for food and useful materials\, learning firsthand that “waste” is often just value waiting for a second chance. \nToday\, I describe myself as a fabric-pattern DJ\, sampling\, layering\, and remixing textiles into new forms. My favorite technique is visible mending\, because it refuses to hide damage. Instead\, it transforms wear\, loss\, and breakage into part of the story. A visible mend is a declaration of hope: proof that what is torn can be strengthened\, what is worn can be made useful again\, and what bears scars can still be beautiful. For me\, upcycling isn’t a trend; it’s a way of seeing the world. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. DESCRIPTION:Bring your textiles in need of mending for a night of repair and community at Reuse Commons Lake City.\n\n\nNeed help getting your fabric back in tip-top shape? RSVP and come to Reuse Commons Lake City the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. If you have more items to be fixed\, feel free to bring them\, but we will prioritize fixing a few things for everyone over multple items for the same person! Feel free to bring supplies to fix your item\, if you have them. We will have some supplies on hand. Please plan on sticking around while your items are fixed. \nWant to mend at this event? DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use our 3D printers. 3D Printer Orientation is necessary to use our in-house Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers.\n\n\nLearn how to find\, prepare\, and print 3D models on our Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers! No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. Please note that CAD for 3D Printing class is NOT a 3D printer orientation class and will not cover how to use our in-house 3D printers. These classes will not have any content overlap. If you are interested in taking both\, you can take them in either order. \nTaking the 3D Printer Orientation is required to use our in-house printers.
