SUMMARY:Battle Jacket: Decorative Repair w/ Salvation Artists Collective @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Make repairs part of the story! Use visible mending and decorating patching to repair garments with wear and tear. Some materials required.\n\n\nDiscover the art of visible mending and decorative patching. Rather than hiding wear and tear\, visible mending celebrates it through creative stitching\, reinforcing patches\, and decorative repairs. Techniques can be used on jackets\, jeans\, bags\, and other textiles. \nStudents should bring: Garments or fabric items with holes\, worn areas\, stains\, or damage that they would like to repair. \nThis class is part of an optional five-part series\, titled “Wear Your Story: A Battle Jacket Workshop Series with Salvation Artists Collective“. Attendance at each class is recommended\, but it is not required. \nSeries Description: This five-part series explores a variety of low-cost textile arts and creative repair techniques that can be combined to create a unique\, personalized battle jacket. Participants will learn practical skills while developing a wearable piece of art that reflects their interests\, values\, experiences\, and imagination. No prior sewing or artistic experience is required. \nBasic workshop supplies will be provided\, including needles\, thread\, fabric markers\, paints\, brushes\, white cotton fabric for patch-making\, reclaimed fabric suitable for patching and visible mending\, and shared block-printing materials. Students are encouraged to bring their own garments\, fabric scraps\, inspiration images\, and any patches or embellishments they would like to incorporate into their work. \nList of classes in Wear Your Story: A Battle Jacket Workshop Series with Salvation Artists Collective: \n\nBlock Printing for Fabric on Saturday\, July 25\, from 1:30–3:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City: Carve it. Print it. Wear it. Design images on carved foam blocks to create fabric prints. Materials provided. Preparation required.\nFabric Collage on Saturday\, August 8 from 1:30–3:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City: Build meaning from fabric. Create a unique appliqué that can be added to a garment. Materials provided. Preparation required.\nDecorative Repair on Saturday\, August 15 from 1:30–3:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City: Make repairs part of the story. Use visible mending and decorating patching to repair garments with wear and tear. Some materials required.\nPainted Fabric Art on Saturday\, August 22 from 1:30–3:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City: Paint your symbols. Create durable painted designs that can be transferred onto fabric. Materials provided. Preparation required.\nAssembling the Jacket on Saturday\, August 29 from 1:30–3:30pm at Reuse Commons Lake City: Put it all together. Decorate your desired garment with patches from previous classes and personal embellishments. Materials required.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Katie McFarland: I came to upcycling the old-fashioned way: because I had to. A punk since 1983\, I’ve spent a lifetime rescuing\, repairing\, remixing\, and reimagining discarded materials. I’ve made clothes from thrift-store finds\, patched garments until they became works of art\, block-printed fabric\, and turned scraps into something worth keeping. When my kids were young\, I dumpster-dived for food and useful materials\, learning firsthand that “waste” is often just value waiting for a second chance. \nToday\, I describe myself as a fabric-pattern DJ\, sampling\, layering\, and remixing textiles into new forms. My favorite technique is visible mending\, because it refuses to hide damage. Instead\, it transforms wear\, loss\, and breakage into part of the story. A visible mend is a declaration of hope: proof that what is torn can be strengthened\, what is worn can be made useful again\, and what bears scars can still be beautiful. For me\, upcycling isn’t a trend; it’s a way of seeing the world. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. Please choose the level that best fits your household’s income. If cost is a concern\, we encourage you to contact us at info@seattlereconomy.org to discuss options. This class is supported by the Seattle Office of Economic Development (OED) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nMuch of the venue is wheelchair accessible. Some classes may utilize the balcony space which only has standard-width door access. The facility has an ADA compliant all-gender restroom.\nNon-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events\, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.\nPlease contact us with any accessibility notes or requests.\n\nGETTING THERE: \n\nBy transit: Served by bus route 522 from Roosevelt Station\, or route 61 from Northgate Station\nBy bike: There are multiple bicycle route options available to the Reuse Commons\, and you are welcome to stow your bicycle inside during your visit.\nCar parking: There is a shared asphalt parking lot that fits up to 10 cars. SUMMARY:Learn to Sew Reusable Cloth Pads for Menstruation and Incontinence @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn about reusable cloth pads as you use basic sewing skills to create them. Materials provided. Advanced beginner sewing skills required.\n\n\nStudents will learn to sew reusable cloth pads for menstruation and/or incontinence using a selection of easy-to-find fabrics\, and quickly learn how the world of cloth pads is ahead of commercial pads in terms of customizations and leak protection. The benefits of cloth pads are endless. \nThis project will help you grow existing sewing skills and confidence (details on prerequisites below). They provide reduced skin irritation\, increased comfort\, total control over the materials (no plastic)\, better breathability\, customized absorption and leak protection\, save plastic from landfills\, and provide cost savings over time. Cloth pads make great gifts and donations to charities as well. \nThis class will cover questions such as: \n\nAre reusable cloth pads sanitary?\nAre they more prone to leaks than disposable options?\nHow fast do they absorb?\nHow do I wash them?\nWhat about stains?\nWhat about super-heavy flows?\n\nStudents will get an overview of the different layers in cloth pads and recommendations for best options based on needs\, be provided with enough supplies to make at least two reusable pads from the available patterns\, learn and get support for the entire process\, and be provided a list of recommended materials (where to find them and how to select the right ones while also offering options for a range of budgets). \nThis class will be taught in an inclusive\, judgment-free environment. There will be direct language around sensitive topics\, like anatomy\, menstruation\, and other aspects of being human. \nPrerequisites: This class is for students who have basic experience using a sewing machine. All students must already be able to thread a machine and bobbin without guidance\, be able to sew straight seams\, understand basic seam allowance\, backstitching\, and simple construction\, and have completed simple projects using a sewing machine. \nAbout the instructor\, Kimberly Swenson: Kimberly has been sewing for 30+ years. It all started when her mother gave her a threaded needle and some scrap fabric when she was six years old; Kimberly would sit in the corner at her work\, mesmerized by how thread could combine two pieces of fabric. She learned how to sew on a machine when she was eight\, then learned the “right” way to sew in Home Economics. Since then\, she’s sewn everything from handbags\, quilts\, a wedding dress\, garments\, and accessories. She loves the creative problem-solving in sewing and the satisfaction of figuring out a challenging project. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Basic Home Education and Maintenance @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn how your home works\, spot common issues\, and explore simple fixes\, from the exterior to the kitchen and bathroom. Women+ space.\n\n\nIn this class\, students will gain a basic understanding of how a home works\, why it does or doesn’t\, and how it can get better. The class will begin with a primer on the exterior or shell of the home\, reviewing components\, identifying potential problem areas\, and discussing potential simple and effective solutions. Next\, the class will work its way through the home and the areas of greatest concern – the kitchen and bathroom. \nIf time allows\, there will also be a discussion of heating/cooling systems\, basic plumbing and electrical\, etc. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. If this class isn’t the right fit for you\, we also offer many workshops that are open to everyone. See our full schedule at seattlereconomy.org. \nAbout the instructor\, Aileen Gagney: Aileen is an architect by trade\, a former general contractor\, home inspector\, and pest inspector. She is also a Healthy Home Specialist and is Green-Advantage Certified. She has been teaching people about their homes for over 40 years. She spent 15 years as the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist Program and\, for the past 12\, as the Senior Technical Advisor and Trainer for a Tribal Healthy Homes non-profit. She helps people understand how their homes work by providing simple\, effective advice and solutions to make homes safe\, comfortable\, healthy\, and energy efficient. Personally\, she has spent the last 29 years renovating a 1916 Ballard craftsman into a net zero home – reducing energy consumption from $3100/yr to $0! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. If cost is a concern\, we encourage you to contact us at info@seattlereconomy.org to discuss options. \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom.
