Bring your textiles or craft supplies (or use our sewing supplies)\, and get to know your community!\n\n\nGot a collection of hole-filled socks you can’t get rid of? Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? We plan to host it on the second weekend of each month: The second Saturday at the Shoreline Tool Library and the second Sunday at the NE Seattle Tool Library! As it grows\, we may change it to a different day\, but we’ll let you know on social media. \nACCESSIBILITY:  \n\nMuch of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible.  All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. SUMMARY:Intro to English Paper Pieced Quilting
DESCRIPTION:Make a quilted flower by hand with English Paper Piecing. Create at least one and take home a travel kit to keep sewing on the go.\n\n\nStudents will create their own quilted hexagonal flower garden using the English Paper Piecing method in this beginner-friendly class. This scrap-basting quilting technique is done entirely by hand\, making it the ultimate portable craft. Using pre-cut paper shapes\, fabric is wrapped around and basted\, then hand-stitched together to create precise designs before the paper is removed. \nThere will be a number of scrap fabrics to choose from\, assuring each hexie flower is as unique as its creator! Students will create at least one flower in class\, ready to use on its own or expand into a larger piece and leave with a travel kit to keep quilting on the go. \nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Benson: Sarah Benson is a broom maker and fiber artist based in Shoreline\, WA. She has a background in fiber arts and printmaking and received her BFA from Arizona State University. Dedicated to a life of creating\, learning\, and skill sharing\, she began focusing on traditional handcrafts in earnest while homesteading in the San Juan Islands. DESCRIPTION:Bring your textiles in need of mending for a night of repair and community at the NE Seattle Tool Library.\n\n\nNeed help getting your fabric back in tip-top shape? RSVP and come to the NE Seattle Tool Library the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. If you have more items to be fixed\, feel free to bring them\, but we will prioritize fixing a few things for everyone over multple items for the same person! Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Jennifer Yasis and Cinthia Marisol: Jen has been sewing for years\, from simple garments\, quilts\, bags\, pillows and accessories from patterns or reconstructing what she sees. She enjoys sharing what she’s learned to help others build confidence in their skills in a supportive\, encouraging environment. Cinthia Marisol\, (they/elle)\, is a two spirit queer writer and interdisciplinary artist. SUMMARY:Mending by Hand
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of hand mending\, including how to patch holes. Start with a demo\, then practice on your own item. All supplies provided.\n\n\nIn this class\, students will learn the basics of mending by hand\, and specifically how to patch and fix holes by hand. The first hour will be a demonstration by the instructor\, and the second hour will be time for you to work on your own mending with lots of guidance from the instructor\, so be sure to bring something that needs a patch or has holes that need to be fixed. \nAll supplies provided. Students are welcome to bring their own fabric scraps for patching. \nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Jordan: Sarah has years of experience mending clothes via hand embroidery\, using a machine to patch\, light garment reconstruction such as reattaching belt loops and adding darts\, fixing holes and tears\, etc. She’s also an experienced quilter. SUMMARY:Crochet an Upcycled Origami Bag
DESCRIPTION:Turn old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or plastic bags into a crocheted origami bag! 8mm hooks are provided\, but bag material is required.\n\n\nLearn how to crochet a beginner-friendly origami bag using old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or even plastic bags! In the first part of the class\, students will explore making “yarn” out of repurposed materials. Students will then use the yarn they created to crochet a cute origami bag.
