DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. Kids are encouraged to bring their back-to-school supplies such as notebooks\, pencil cases\, or whatever else they may want to decorate with collage. \nCollage materials and tools provided\, but you are welcome to bring imagery for collaging as well. \nA parent or guardian must purchase a ticket (Adult Admission) and be present for the entirety of the class\, and is encouraged to join in the creation process. Tickets for all minors must also be purchased (Kid Admission). \nAbout the instructor\, Rachel Lynette: Rachel is a lifelong teacher\, first with children\, then with adults\, and always with an eye toward what makes people light up. A natural creative explorer\, she gravitates toward any process that surprises her\, and SolCollage does exactly that. There’s something almost magical about the way seemingly unrelated images come together to create something meaningful. SUMMARY:Battle Jacket: Assembling the Jacket w/ Salvation Artists Collective @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Put it all together! Decorate your desired garment with patches from previous classes and personal embellishments. Materials required.\n\n\nBring your jacket\, vest\, overshirt\, tote bag\, or other sturdy fabric item and begin assembling your personal battle jacket. Participants will plan layouts\, attach patches\, combine techniques learned throughout the series\, and receive guidance on creating a cohesive design. By the end of class\, students will have the beginnings of a wearable piece of folk art that can continue to evolve over time. \nStudents should bring: A garment to decorate\, completed patches from previous classes\, and any additional patches\, pins\, buttons\, or embellishments they wish to include. \nThis class is part of an optional five-part series\, titled “Wear Your Story: A Battle Jacket Workshop Series with Salvation Artists Collective“. Attendance at each class is recommended\, but it is not required. \nSeries Description: This five-part series explores a variety of low-cost textile arts and creative repair techniques that can be combined to create a unique\, personalized battle jacket. Participants will learn practical skills while developing a wearable piece of art that reflects their interests\, values\, experiences\, and imagination. No prior sewing or artistic experience is required. \nBasic workshop supplies will be provided\, including needles\, thread\, fabric markers\, paints\, brushes\, white cotton fabric for patch-making\, reclaimed fabric suitable for patching and visible mending\, and shared block-printing materials. Materials required.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Katie McFarland: I came to upcycling the old-fashioned way: because I had to. A punk since 1983\, I’ve spent a lifetime rescuing\, repairing\, remixing\, and reimagining discarded materials. I’ve made clothes from thrift-store finds\, patched garments until they became works of art\, block-printed fabric\, and turned scraps into something worth keeping. When my kids were young\, I dumpster-dived for food and useful materials\, learning firsthand that “waste” is often just value waiting for a second chance. \nToday\, I describe myself as a fabric-pattern DJ\, sampling\, layering\, and remixing textiles into new forms. My favorite technique is visible mending\, because it refuses to hide damage. Instead\, it transforms wear\, loss\, and breakage into part of the story. A visible mend is a declaration of hope: proof that what is torn can be strengthened\, what is worn can be made useful again\, and what bears scars can still be beautiful. DESCRIPTION:A beginner class introducing you to a variety of saws through instruction and hands-on practice. Safety materials required. Women+ space.\n\n\nLynette will lead this class on commonly used power saws\, including jig\, circular\, and miter/chop. This is a beginner class geared toward those who have no or very little experience using these tools. \nAttendees will learn about saw anatomy and how to choose the correct saw for various tasks\, while emphasizing safety and workspace setup. Attendees will have a chance to handle each type of saw and practice some basic cuts. \nNOTE: Students must provide their own hearing protection\, safety glasses\, and N-95 dust mask. While saws will be available\, students who have their own jig or circular saws are welcome to bring them along.  \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? SUMMARY:Simple Wood Furniture Repair for Beginners (S4) @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Gain the skills and confidence required to repair and refresh small wooden furniture. Some materials required. No experience needed. 18+.\n\n\nLearn how to repair and refresh small wooden furniture pieces in this beginner-friendly\, hands-on workshop. Participants will practice basic repair skills\, including identifying loose joints\, safely taking pieces apart\, re-gluing and clamping\, replacing small damaged parts\, sanding rough areas\, and doing simple finish touch-ups. \nThis class focuses on everyday tools like drills\, drivers\, circular (or miter) saws\, orbital sanders\, clamps\, and sanding blocks. Safety will be covered first\, including eye protection\, dust management\, safe tool handling\, and proper clamping. \nBy the end of class\, participants will leave with a repaired item of their own and the confidence to tackle simple furniture repairs at home. No prior woodworking experience is needed. \nImportant Notes: \n\nPlease bring one small-to-medium wooden item to repair\, such as a chair\, small table\, nightstand\, or frame.\nParticipants must wear closed-toe shoes\, bring an N-95 mask\, and be 18 or older.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Tiffany Lamoreaux: Tiffany has been doing “furniture flipping” for about 5 years now. She is passionate about keeping things out of the landfill\, so if she sees a piece of furniture on the side of the road\, she will often take it home and give it a second life. Most furniture needs minimal repair but lots of TLC. Sometimes Tiffany does complete redesign work\, sometimes she does a straight restoration\, but always she brings new life to a piece of furniture that would otherwise be tossed away. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series (S4) are offered at a reduced rate. Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form.
