Bring your textiles or craft supplies (or use our sewing supplies)\, and get to know your community!\n\n\nGot a collection of hole-filled socks you can’t get rid of? Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? We plan to host it on the second weekend of each month: The second Saturday at the Shoreline Tool Library and the second Sunday at the NE Seattle Tool Library! As it grows\, we may change it to a different day\, but we’ll let you know on social media. \nACCESSIBILITY:  \n\nMuch of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible.  All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. Growing up in his father’s bike shop\, Russ literally has 60+ years of experience. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. In this class\, students will review the basics of how their homes ‘work’ – from identifying critical components to how to reduce a person’s exposure. Low-cost or no-cost solutions will be discussed\, and simple tools will be demonstrated that anyone can build. \nAbout the instructor\, Aileen Gagney: Aileen is an architect by trade\, a former general contractor\, home inspector\, and pest inspector. She is also a Healthy Home Specialist and is Green-Advantage Certified. She has been teaching people about their homes for over 40 years. She spent 15 years as the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist Program and\, for the past 12\, as the Senior Technical Advisor and Trainer for a Tribal Healthy Homes non-profit. DESCRIPTION:Bring your textiles in need of mending for a night of repair and community at the NE Seattle Tool Library.\n\n\nNeed help getting your fabric back in tip-top shape? RSVP and come to the NE Seattle Tool Library the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. If you have more items to be fixed\, feel free to bring them\, but we will prioritize fixing a few things for everyone over multple items for the same person! SUMMARY:Make a Braided Wool Rug (4-Part Class)
DESCRIPTION:Over four sessions\, turn wool garments and blankets into a rug. Practice braiding\, shaping\, splicing\, and tapering. All supplies provided.\n\n\nIn this class series over the course of four Sundays in May and June\, students will learn how to turn old woven wool garments and blankets into attractive and useful rugs. Students will learn: \n\nMaking a T-Start\, and braiding vs. plaiting.\nBeginning to braid\, and making a curve or corner. Making the rug round vs. oval.\nLacing.\nSplicing in more material as you braid\, and strategies for color changes.\nTapering down and finishing.\nPreparing your own materials: washing\, deconstructing\, cutting strips\, splicing\, and folding. Securing the fold by pressing\, pinning\, or basting.\n\nBy the end of this series\, students will either be on their way to finishing or will have finished a small braided wool rug. DESCRIPTION:Learn how your home works\, spot common issues\, and explore simple fixes\, from the exterior to the kitchen and bathroom. Women+ space.\n\n\nIn this class\, students will gain a basic understanding of how a home works\, why it does or doesn’t\, and how it can get better. The class will begin with a primer on the exterior or shell of the home\, reviewing components\, identifying potential problem areas\, and discussing potential simple and effective solutions. Next\, the class will work its way through the home and the areas of greatest concern – the kitchen and bathroom. \nIf time allows\, there will also be a discussion of heating/cooling systems\, basic plumbing and electrical\, etc. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. If this class isn’t the right fit for you\, we also offer many workshops that are open to everyone. She is also a Healthy Home Specialist and is Green-Advantage Certified. She has been teaching people about their homes for over 40 years. She spent 15 years as the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist Program and\, for the past 12\, as the Senior Technical Advisor and Trainer for a Tribal Healthy Homes non-profit. She helps people understand how their homes work by providing simple\, effective advice and solutions to make homes safe\, comfortable\, healthy\, and energy efficient. SUMMARY:Intro to English Paper Pieced Quilting
DESCRIPTION:Make a quilted flower by hand with English Paper Piecing. Create at least one and take home a travel kit to keep sewing on the go.\n\n\nStudents will create their own quilted hexagonal flower garden using the English Paper Piecing method in this beginner-friendly class. This scrap-basting quilting technique is done entirely by hand\, making it the ultimate portable craft. Using pre-cut paper shapes\, fabric is wrapped around and basted\, then hand-stitched together to create precise designs before the paper is removed. \nThere will be a number of scrap fabrics to choose from\, assuring each hexie flower is as unique as its creator! Students will create at least one flower in class\, ready to use on its own or expand into a larger piece and leave with a travel kit to keep quilting on the go. \nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Benson: Sarah Benson is a broom maker and fiber artist based in Shoreline\, WA. She has a background in fiber arts and printmaking and received her BFA from Arizona State University. RSVP and come to the NE Seattle Tool Library the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of hand mending\, including how to patch holes. Start with a demo\, then practice on your own item. SUMMARY:Crochet an Upcycled Origami Bag
DESCRIPTION:Turn old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or plastic bags into a crocheted origami bag! 8mm hooks are provided\, but bag material is required.\n\n\nLearn how to crochet a beginner-friendly origami bag using old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or even plastic bags! In the first part of the class\, students will explore making “yarn” out of repurposed materials. Students will then use the yarn they created to crochet a cute origami bag.
