You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. DESCRIPTION:Bring an item that needs darning\, and learn how to do it yourself! We recommend basic hand sewing skills\, but this is a beginner class.\n\n\nEveryone will bring an item of theirs that they would like to darn\, and after a tutorial\, we will each work on our own item for the remainder of the class with instructor supervision. This class is a beginner’s class\, but it will help to have BASIC hand sewing skills. This class will also teach people how to DIY darning mushrooms out of glass jars and various household items. \nIf you have a darning needle and/or a darning mushroom/egg\, please bring it so we can teach you how to use your tools! \nAbout the instructor\, Marlee Blue: Marlee has been mending clothes for a number of years. They are passionate about sustainability and keeping things out of the landfill. Beginner-friendly.\n\n\nGive forgotten plushies a strange new life! In this class\, you’ll create your own spooky-cute “taxidermy” art piece using stuffed animals\, ribbons\, buttons\, trims\, vintage findings\, and other whimsical odds and ends. \nBuild a mysterious cryptid by combining different plush animals\, or create a playful mounted “dissection” display full of colorful faux organs and treasures. \nNo sewing or art experience is necessary. You will be guided through the creative process in this artist-led workshop. You are encouraged to bring your own plush stuffed animals or trims if you have an idea you want to manifest. Otherwise\, all materials are provided. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs @ STL
DESCRIPTION:This is a hands-on introduction to drills and drivers\, covering parts\, bits\, fasteners\, and safety. Safety glasses needed. Women+ space.\n\n\nThis class is geared toward absolute beginners or those who have very little experience using electric drills or impact drivers. \nAttendees will learn about drill and driver anatomy\, how to choose the correct drill or driver bit\, and choose the right fastener for common projects while emphasizing safety and workspace set up. There will be a hands-on part of this class\, where students will have a chance to handle these tools and practice drilling and driving into different materials. Students will also be introduced to drill guides and drill presses. \nStudents are required to bring their own safety glasses. Students are welcome to bring their own drill/driver and/or impact driver\, though there will be some on hand to use. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use our 3D printers. 3D Printer Orientation is necessary to use our in-house Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers.\n\n\nLearn how to find\, prepare\, and print 3D models on our Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers! No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. Please note that CAD for 3D Printing class is NOT a 3D printer orientation class and will not cover how to use our in-house 3D printers. These classes will not have any content overlap. DESCRIPTION:Learn how your home works\, spot common issues\, and explore simple fixes\, from the exterior to the kitchen and bathroom. Women+ space.\n\n\nIn this class\, students will gain a basic understanding of how a home works\, why it does or doesn’t\, and how it can get better. The class will begin with a primer on the exterior or shell of the home\, reviewing components\, identifying potential problem areas\, and discussing potential simple and effective solutions. Next\, the class will work its way through the home and the areas of greatest concern – the kitchen and bathroom. \nIf time allows\, there will also be a discussion of heating/cooling systems\, basic plumbing and electrical\, etc. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. Below is an approximate plan for the event: \n\n2–5pm: Costume Sewing and Swap\n4–7pm: Cider Pressing\n5–6pm: Music Setup\n6–6:15pm: A word from Seattle REconomy\n6:15–9:30: Party Time (Food\, Music\, and Merriment)\n\nDetailed Plan (more details to come!): \nCostume Crafting & Swap at 2–5pm: Visit a variety of maker stations\, where you can create\, enhance\, or swap your Halloween costume(s)! There will be reclaimed materials and tools\, including light sewing supplies and fabric\, to design and build a costume from scratch\, plus expert sewists to help make your dreams a reality. Some materials will be for sale through our partners\, and we encourage you to bring your own. Tables will be set up throughout the space for folks who would like to work independently\, while chatting with other creatives working on their own projects. We’ll also have Menders available who can hem garments\, repair clothing\, and attach embellishments. \nCider Pressing at 4–7: We’re reserving a couple of cider presses from the tool libraries\, and there will be a couple of stations set up for folks to press apples. While we’re connecting with some local produce stands and grocers for apples\, bringing your own is highly encouraged. This activity may take place outside under canopies. \nShifting to Music and Dance\, Guest Arrival\, and Final Setup at 5–6pm: Come in\, explore the space\, and talk with fellow community members as we set up the space for the rest of the night. The band will be getting ready\, and we’ll be putting out more refreshments and food. SUMMARY:Learn How to Knit (Optional 2-Part Class) @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of knitting so you can start you first project and get hands-on support in the second session. Some materials required.\n\n\nThis two-session class will give you the skills and confidence to start your first knitting project. \nThe first session (11/7) will cover the basic steps of knitting. This includes the tools you need\, casting on stitches\, making both knit and purl stitches\, and binding off stitches. The first session will include a discussion of beginner projects\, how to read a pattern\, and how to pick out materials for a project. The focus of the first session is on practicing the skills rather than starting a project. \nThe second session (11/14) will be optional and structured more like office hours. Students can come and work on projects together\, and the instructor will be on hand to provide support. This could include working on an in-progress project\, getting help applying the skills from the first class to a specific project\, or picking out the pattern for a first project. \nStudents need to bring: Students need to bring: Two double-pointed needles size 7-9 and worsted-weight (medium-thick) yarn. Bring your own bike and learn from hands-on experience by addressing your specific needs\, such as gear\, brake\, and bearing adjustments\, wheel truing and bike fit. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. Growing up in his father’s bike shop\, Russ literally has 60+ years of experience. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. Bring your textiles or craft supplies (or use our sewing supplies)\, and get to know your community!\n\n\nGot a collection of hole-filled socks you can’t get rid of? Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? DESCRIPTION:Get creative as you make a collage using upcycled materials. If you sign up for multiple classes\, you'll build a deck of Sol Collage cards.\n\n\nAn instructor with Salvation Art Collective\, a Reuse Commons partner\, will guide you to make a collage using upcycled materials in a warm and inviting space that encourages connection\, conversation\, and creativity. \nThis is a recurring class\, and returning attendees will get the opportunity to build a deck of Sol Collage cards. You must sign up for each instance you plan on attending. \nAbout the instructor\, Rachel Lynette: Rachel is a lifelong teacher\, first with children\, then with adults\, and always with an eye toward what makes people light up. A natural creative explorer\, she gravitates toward any process that surprises her\, and SolCollage does exactly that. There’s something almost magical about the way seemingly unrelated images come together to create something meaningful.
