DESCRIPTION:Bring your textiles in need of mending for a night of repair and community at Reuse Commons Lake City.\n\n\nNeed help getting your fabric back in tip-top shape? RSVP and come to Reuse Commons Lake City the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. If you have more items to be fixed\, feel free to bring them\, but we will prioritize fixing a few things for everyone over multple items for the same person! Feel free to bring supplies to fix your item\, if you have them. We will have some supplies on hand. Please plan on sticking around while your items are fixed. \nWant to mend at this event? Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. SUMMARY:Basic Lamp Repair @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to do basic lamp repairs on a variety of household lamps! You can even bring your own broken lamp for hands-on instruction.\n\n\nThe class will cover repairs of typical 110V household floor\, desk\, and table lamps. Topics will include safety\, the anatomy of typical lamps (including electrical parts)\, the various types of common lamp switches\, as well as instructor-guided replacement of lamps brought by students. Time and resources permitting\, other kinds of lamps may be discussed\, but the primary focus is on normal 110V types. \nStudents are welcome to bring their lamps in need of repair\, or watch and learn. If you are bringing a lamp that doesn’t have a brass socket\, you may want to bring your own replacement socket with the right color. Likewise\, if you need a cord replaced that is not the typical black\, you may want to get one of your preferred color. \nAbout the instructors\, Bruce Cozens and Cathal Cunningham: Bruce and Cathal are active Fixers at our monthly Fix-It Night events\, and spend much of their time doing all kinds of small household appliance repairs. \nThis class is offered at a reduced rate as a part of Seattle REconomy’s Community Tool Chest fundraiser in support of expanding programming to our new Lake City location. DESCRIPTION:From picture frames on drywall to lights on ceilings\, you'll learn how to hang many items on different surfaces. Some materials suggested.\n\n\nThere’s always something you want to put on a wall. Picture frames\, lights\, mirrors\, coat racks\, hat racks\, hooks\, etc. Lights and hooks often get put on ceilings; picture frames and coat racks\, not so much. But walls are not all the same. There’s wood and drywall\, plaster and lath\, brick\, concrete\, and\, rarely\, straw. \nHow do you attach a light to a ceiling? A coat rack to drywall? Or brick? Or straw? How do you repair an “Oopsy!” when your hanging effort needs a repair? We’ll cover as many of these combinations as we can\, with demonstrations and audience participation. \nStudents are encouraged to bring their own drills and similar tools. \nAbout the instructor\, Geoff Poor: A long-time and valued Seattle REconomy volunteer\, Geoff has run a handyman business since retiring from a career in education eight years ago. He’s attached many\, many things to walls and ceilings; drywall\, plaster and lath\, brick\, concrete\, etc. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. Please RSVP to attend the swap (you don’t need to register if you only plan on donating clothing or costumes). \n\nIf you’d like to browse what’s donated\, RSVP and come by any time on September 27 between 11am and 1pm.\nIf you’d like to donate\, drop off your donations directly to the Shoreline Tool Library on September 27 from 10-11am. Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. DESCRIPTION:Work with a bike shack volunteer to learn how to tune up your bicycle!\n\n\nSpend an evening at the Shoreline Tool Library learning the basics of maintaining your bike. Bring your own bike and learn from hands-on experience by addressing your specific needs\, such as gear\, brake\, and bearing adjustments\, wheel truing and bike fit. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. Growing up in his father’s bike shop\, Russ literally has 60+ years of experience. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. We are hosting a repair night at Northgate Community Center. \nWe will help you fix and learn to fix your broken tools\, lamps\, toys\, furniture\, appliances\, and any other broken items that you can carry in on your own. We’ll also be offering mending services on apparel and accessories. We encourage you to help as much as you can and enjoy the community of reuse! \nIf you are interested in being a Fixer for an event\, please reach out to our Outreach Coordinator at outreach@seattlereconomy.org.
