DESCRIPTION:Bring by your broken household items for a night of fixing and community building at the NE Seattle Tool Library!\n\n\nIt’s time to start collecting all those items around the house that need to be fixed but you don’t know how. We are hosting a repair night at the NE Seattle Tool Library. We will help you fix and learn to fix your broken tools\, lamps\, toys\, furniture\, appliances\, and any other broken items that you can carry in on your own. We encourage you to help as much as you can and enjoy the community of reuse! \nIf you are excited about fixing and want to help out with this event or other fixing opportunities we are looking for more fixers. Sign up to help out at this event here or join our list of fixers by sending us an email at NESTL@seattlereconomy.org. \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nMuch of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible.  All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. SUMMARY:Learn How to Knit (Optional 2-Part Class)
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of knitting so you can start you first project and get hands-on support in the second session. Some materials required.\n\n\nThis two-session class will give you the skills and confidence to start your first knitting project. \nThe first session (11/7) will cover the basic steps of knitting. This includes the tools you need\, casting on stitches\, making both knit and purl stitches\, and binding off stitches. The first session will include a discussion of beginner projects\, how to read a pattern\, and how to pick out materials for a project. The focus of the first session is on practicing the skills rather than starting a project. \nThe second session (11/14) will be optional and structured more like office hours. Students can come and work on projects together\, and the instructor will be on hand to provide support. This could include working on an in-progress project\, getting help applying the skills from the first class to a specific project\, or picking out the pattern for a first project. \nStudents need to bring: Students need to bring: Two double-pointed needles size 7-9 and worsted-weight (medium-thick) yarn. Note that if students already have other needle sizes and yarn weights\, they will work and buying more is not necessary. \nBelow are the dates for each part of the class. You only have to register for the first date listed (November 7). You have the option during checkout to let us know whether you plan on attending the second optional session\, and you may email us at info@seattlereconomy.org if that answer changes: \n\nSession One (Required): Saturday\, November 7\, from 3–5pm at the NE Seattle Tool Library\nSession Two (Optional): Saturday\, November 14\, from 2–4pm at the NE Seattle Tool Library\n\nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Hilton: Sarah learned how to knit when she was seven years old and she has been knitting consistently for the last six years. She currently knits socks\, scarves\, hats\, mittens\, sweaters\, and pot holders. She considers herself mostly a self-taught knitter. Her aunt taught her the basics (like what she is proposing in this class) when she was young and she built up her knitting skills from books\, blogs\, and YouTube videos. Sarah wants to show others how to use these resources to support their knitting journey. She taught her first class for us in April\, and it sold out quickly. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things. Joslyn learned to sew in Home Ec (economics) class in high school back when they taught such a thing.. the 1970s! There is no ADA accessible parking.

DESCRIPTION:Bring by your broken household items for a night of fixing and community building at the Shoreline Tool Library!\n\n\nIt’s time to start collecting all those items around the house that need to be fixed but you don’t know how. We are hosting a repair night at the Shoreline Tool Library. We will help you fix and learn to fix your broken tools\, lamps\, toys\, furniture\, appliances\, and any other broken items that you can carry in on your own. We encourage you to help as much as you can and enjoy the community of reuse! \nIf you are excited about fixing and want to help out with this event or other fixing opportunities we are looking for more fixers.
