DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic safety of our woodworking tools. Woodshop Orientation is necessary to use our Woodshop during our Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nSign up for Woodshop Orientation to learn the basic safety of the tools that we have in our Woodshop. This will give you the basic training required to safely utilize our various woodworking tools\, and it will give you the prerequisite to use the space during Woodshop Open Hours. \nThe space is equipped with a large SawStop table saw\, 12″ compound sliding miter saw\, 2 band saws (one for resaw)\, drill press\, router table\, jointer\, planer\, spindle sander\, scroll saw\, and various hand tools. \nPrerequisite: \nYou must be a Seattle REconomy tool library (NE Seattle Tool Library/Shoreline Tool Library) member to take this class. There are suggested membership options\, but membership is pay-what-you-can\, and we do not require proof of income. Please come to the East entrance of the NE Seattle Tool Library at the time of the class. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use our 3D printers. 3D Printer Orientation is necessary to use our in-house Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers.\n\n\nLearn how to find\, prepare\, and print 3D models on our Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers! No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. Please note that CAD for 3D Printing class is NOT a 3D printer orientation class and will not cover how to use our in-house 3D printers. These classes will not have any content overlap. If you are interested in taking both\, you can take them in either order. \nTaking the 3D Printer Orientation is required to use our in-house printers. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things. Joslyn learned to sew in Home Ec (economics) class in high school back when they taught such a thing.. the 1970s! Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may learn more about the Woodshop here and sign up for Woodshop Orientations here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. If a Steward is available\, they will get back to you confirming one of the requested times.  \nWe also recommend filling out our Class & Event Notification Registration form and checking “Woodshop Open Hours (Woodshop Orientation Required)” to be notified when we post a Woodshop Open Hours next. \nIf a time within a currently listed Woodshop Open Hours works\, but you cannot make it within the first 5 minutes of its start time\, please email ava@seattlereconomy.org\, and we can try to work with your availability. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs
DESCRIPTION:This is a hands-on introduction to drills and drivers\, covering parts\, bits\, fasteners\, and safety. Safety glasses needed. Women+ space.\n\n\nThis class is geared toward absolute beginners or those who have very little experience using electric drills or impact drivers. \nAttendees will learn about drill and driver anatomy\, how to choose the correct drill or driver bit\, and choose the right fastener for common projects while emphasizing safety and workspace set up. There will be a hands-on part of this class\, where students will have a chance to handle these tools and practice drilling and driving into different materials. Students will also be introduced to drill guides and drill presses. Students are required to bring their own safety glasses. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. You can donate and/or swap!\n\n\nWe are celebrating National Textile Day on May 3rd by having our first-ever Fabric and Yarn Swap! Do you have fabric and yarn that you’d like to move along or do you need fabric and yarn? \nDetails below\, but first… \nSeattle REconomy holds monthly “Community Threads” events at both tool libraries to provide a comfortable location for tool library members to work on their textile projects. \nSeattle REconomy has also had successful Clothing Swaps\, where members of the public donate clean and functional clothes for others to take\, free of charge. These clothing swaps keep textiles no longer wanted out of the landfill and ensure they’re moved along to people who need or want them\, at no cost. \nTo extend the textile-centered good vibes created by Community Threads and the Clothing Swaps\, we are having a Fabric and Yarn Swap at the Shoreline Tool Library! \nHaving fabric and yarn swaps helps fulfill Seattle REconomy’s mission by fostering sustainability\, growing community\, sharing resources\, and encouraging giving and trading. SUMMARY:How to Patch Wall Holes and Prep for Painting
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to repair damaged walls\, from small holes to large drywall patches\, plus finishing for paint with some hands-on practice.\n\n\nThis class will provide instruction\, demonstration and practice in repairing walls that have holes or other damage. Students will work on smaller areas requiring only some fill and repair\, as well as larger areas requiring cutting out and replacing drywall sections. Also included will be the process of finishing and preparing for painting. Plaster and lathe repairs can be addressed if students would like and time allows. \nAbout the instructor\, Geoff Poor: Geoff has patched many holes in many walls in his handyman business\, and has often taught homeowners how to do it themselves. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. SUMMARY:Make a Braided Wool Rug (4-Part Class)
DESCRIPTION:Over four sessions\, turn wool garments and blankets into a rug. Practice braiding\, shaping\, splicing\, and tapering. All supplies provided.\n\n\nIn this class series over the course of four Sundays in May and June\, students will learn how to turn old woven wool garments and blankets into attractive and useful rugs. Students will learn: \n\nMaking a T-Start\, and braiding vs. plaiting.\nBeginning to braid\, and making a curve or corner. Making the rug round vs. oval.\nLacing.\nSplicing in more material as you braid\, and strategies for color changes.\nTapering down and finishing.\nPreparing your own materials: washing\, deconstructing\, cutting strips\, splicing\, and folding. Securing the fold by pressing\, pinning\, or basting.\n\nBy the end of this series\, students will either be on their way to finishing or will have finished a small braided wool rug.
