DESCRIPTION:After this two-part\, beginner-friendly class\, you’ll leave with a  fully finished side table! Some materials required. Women+ Space.\n\n\nDesigned as a supportive and welcoming environment\, this two-part class is ideal for students who are new to building but ready to take the next step. Whether you’ve taken Tool School for Women+: Power Saws and/or Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs\, or have equivalent experience\, this is a great way to apply those foundational skills to a real project.  \nYou\, the student\, will move at a comfortable pace with plenty of time for questions\, shared learning\, and individualized support. Along the way\, you’ll learn a simple joinery technique\, glue up boards to create a panel\, and practice layout skills like drawing circles on wood. \nBy the end of the course\, you’ll go home with a fully finished side table and the confidence to tackle your next build! \nWhat to Bring: \n\nYou are required to bring your own safety glasses\, hearing protection\, and N95 dust mask.\nAlthough there will be a variety of colors of stains/finishing products available\, you are encouraged to bring the stain or paint that you’d like to use on their table.\nIf you have a jigsaw\, palm sander\, or orbital sander of your own that you’d like to use\, you are welcome to bring it.\n\nPlease be sure you can make it to both of the class periods (listed below) and register only for the first date listed (June 27th): \n\nPart One: Saturday\, June 27th\, from 3–7pm at the Shoreline Tool Library\nPart Two: Sunday\, June 28th\, from 10am–12pm at the Shoreline Tool Library\n\nAbout the instructor\, Lynette Wacholz: Lynette is nearly retired from a career in healthcare. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Fix-A-Flat
DESCRIPTION:Bring your bike to class with you and learn how to repair a flat tire\, from start to finish\, in this beginner-friendly class. Women+ space.\n\n\nAre you interested in learning how to repair a flat tire\, an essential skill for all cyclists? Our beginner-friendly Fix-A-Flat class will teach you everything from removing the tire\, to patching the tube\, to pumping the tire back up and making sure it’s safe to get back on your bike. \nNo experience needed\, and you’ll leave the class with the skills to handle flat tires confidently. This class applies to tires with innertubes (i.e. not “tubeless”). Students should bring a bicycle to the class. \nAbout the instructor\, Nancy Helm: Nancy is an avid cyclist with a passion for teaching others not only how to ride a bicycle\, but also how to maintain and repair their bicycles. She brings to this class over ten years teaching basic bicycle maintenance at Cascade Bicycle Club\, including four years teaching women and non-binary classes. She’s also taught “How to Buy a Used Bicycle” at the Shoreline Tool Library. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Jennifer Yasis and Cinthia Marisol: Jen has been sewing for years\, from simple garments\, quilts\, bags\, pillows and accessories from patterns or reconstructing what she sees. She enjoys sharing what she’s learned to help others build confidence in their skills in a supportive\, encouraging environment. Cinthia Marisol\, (they/elle)\, is a two spirit queer writer and interdisciplinary artist. SUMMARY:Mending by Hand
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of hand mending\, including how to patch holes. Start with a demo\, then practice on your own item. All supplies provided.\n\n\nIn this class\, students will learn the basics of mending by hand\, and specifically how to patch and fix holes by hand. The first hour will be a demonstration by the instructor\, and the second hour will be time for you to work on your own mending with lots of guidance from the instructor\, so be sure to bring something that needs a patch or has holes that need to be fixed. \nAll supplies provided. Students are welcome to bring their own fabric scraps for patching. \nAbout the instructor\, Sarah Jordan: Sarah has years of experience mending clothes via hand embroidery\, using a machine to patch\, light garment reconstruction such as reattaching belt loops and adding darts\, fixing holes and tears\, etc. She’s also an experienced quilter. SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs
DESCRIPTION:This is a hands-on introduction to drills and drivers\, covering parts\, bits\, fasteners\, and safety. Safety glasses needed. Women+ space.\n\n\nThis class is geared toward absolute beginners or those who have very little experience using electric drills or impact drivers. \nAttendees will learn about drill and driver anatomy\, how to choose the correct drill or driver bit\, and choose the right fastener for common projects while emphasizing safety and workspace set up. There will be a hands-on part of this class\, where students will have a chance to handle these tools and practice drilling and driving into different materials. Students will also be introduced to drill guides and drill presses. \nStudents are required to bring their own safety glasses. Students are welcome to bring their own drill/driver and/or impact driver\, though there will be some on hand to use. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. Leave with a sampler\, PDF guide and confidence.\n\n\nStudents will leave this class with the foundation for utilizing a standard home sewing machine. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things. Joslyn learned to sew in Home Ec (economics) class in high school back when they taught such a thing.. the 1970s! She’s stock piled more fabric than she’ll ever be able to use; fabric stores are one of her happy places! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries.
