SUMMARY:Basic Lamp Repair @ RCLC
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to do basic lamp repairs on a variety of household lamps! You can even bring your own broken lamp for hands-on instruction.\n\n\nThe class will cover repairs of typical 110V household floor\, desk\, and table lamps. Topics will include safety\, the anatomy of typical lamps (including electrical parts)\, the various types of common lamp switches\, as well as instructor-guided replacement of lamps brought by students. Time and resources permitting\, other kinds of lamps may be discussed\, but the primary focus is on normal 110V types. \nStudents are welcome to bring their lamps in need of repair\, or watch and learn. If you are bringing a lamp that doesn’t have a brass socket\, you may want to bring your own replacement socket with the right color. Likewise\, if you need a cord replaced that is not the typical black\, you may want to get one of your preferred color. \nAbout the instructors\, Bruce Cozens and Cathal Cunningham: Bruce and Cathal are active Fixers at our monthly Fix-It Night events\, and spend much of their time doing all kinds of small household appliance repairs. \nThis class is offered at a reduced rate as a part of Seattle REconomy’s Community Tool Chest fundraiser in support of expanding programming to our new Lake City location. If cost is a concern\, we encourage you to contact us at info@seattlereconomy.org to discuss options. DESCRIPTION:From picture frames on drywall to lights on ceilings\, you'll learn how to hang many items on different surfaces. Some materials suggested.\n\n\nThere’s always something you want to put on a wall. Picture frames\, lights\, mirrors\, coat racks\, hat racks\, hooks\, etc. Lights and hooks often get put on ceilings; picture frames and coat racks\, not so much. But walls are not all the same. There’s wood and drywall\, plaster and lath\, brick\, concrete\, and\, rarely\, straw. \nHow do you attach a light to a ceiling? A coat rack to drywall? Or brick? Or straw? How do you repair an “Oopsy!” when your hanging effort needs a repair? We’ll cover as many of these combinations as we can\, with demonstrations and audience participation. \nStudents are encouraged to bring their own drills and similar tools. \nAbout the instructor\, Geoff Poor: A long-time and valued Seattle REconomy volunteer\, Geoff has run a handyman business since retiring from a career in education eight years ago. You can donate and/or swap!\n\n\nAre you ready to move along cold-weather clothing and accessories that no longer suit or fit you? Do you have Halloween costumes that no longer fit your children? Are they in good condition\, and do you cringe at the thought of throwing them away? \nAre you looking for some warmer clothes and accessories for this coming winter? Are you tired of spending too much money on Halloween costumes that your kids grow out of the next year? Are you interested in sustainable reuse of clothing? \nIf the answer to any of these is “Yes!”\, then please join us at the Shoreline Tool Library’s Winter Clothing and Halloween Costume Swap on September 27! \nThis event is free\, but because of capacity restraints\, we must limit the swap itself to 50 people. Reminder: You must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using Woodshop Open Hours.\n\n\nCome into our Woodshop to work on your personal woodworking projects after completing our Woodshop Orientation. Woodshop Open Hours is designed to give you the space and tools you need to complete your projects. Regardless of your experience\, there will be a knowledgeable Woodshop Steward available to provide machine-based guidance and ensure your safety while you work. They may also be able to provide some project guidance. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nApplicable tool operation refreshers (as needed) to get you started safely and confidently\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nYour project idea\, pictures\, sketch\, or plans (digital or paper)\nAny materials you’ve already sourced\n\nPrerequisite: \nYou must take the Woodshop Orientation class before using any type of Woodshop Open Hours. You may sign up for an Orientation here. \nCan’t find a time? Need extra support? \nIf none of these times work for you or you need a lot of hands-on project support\, please fill out our Woodshop Open Hours Request Google Form. If a Steward is available\, they will get back to you confirming one of the requested times. \nWe also recommend filling out our Class & Event Notification Registration form and checking “Woodshop Open Hours (Woodshop Orientation Required)” to be notified when we post a Woodshop Open Hours next. \nIf a time within a currently listed Woodshop Open Hours works\, but you cannot make it within the first 5 minutes of its start time\, please email info@seattlereconomy.org\, and we can try to work with your availability. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. We’ll also be offering mending services on apparel and accessories. If you sign up for multiple classes\, you'll build a deck of Sol Collage cards.\n\n\nAn instructor with Salvation Art Collective\, a Reuse Commons partner\, will guide you to make a collage using upcycled materials in a warm and inviting space that encourages connection\, conversation\, and creativity. \nThis is a recurring class\, and returning attendees will get the opportunity to build a deck of Sol Collage cards. You must sign up for each instance you plan on attending. \nAbout the instructor\, Rachel Lynette: Rachel is a lifelong teacher\, first with children\, then with adults\, and always with an eye toward what makes people light up. A natural creative explorer\, she gravitates toward any process that surprises her\, and SolCollage does exactly that. There’s something almost magical about the way seemingly unrelated images come together to create something meaningful. In this class\, you’ll create your own spooky-cute “taxidermy” art piece using stuffed animals\, ribbons\, buttons\, trims\, vintage findings\, and other whimsical odds and ends. \nBuild a mysterious cryptid by combining different plush animals\, or create a playful mounted “dissection” display full of colorful faux organs and treasures. \nNo sewing or art experience is necessary. You will be guided through the creative process in this artist-led workshop. You are encouraged to bring your own plush stuffed animals or trims if you have an idea you want to manifest. Otherwise\, all materials are provided. You’ll leave with one finished creation that’s equal parts creepy\, cute\, and a conversation starter. \nAbout the instructor\, Darcy Sera: Art has always been part of my life\, and I love working across all kinds of media\, from traditional printmaking to delightfully strange mixed-media creations. RSVP and come to Reuse Commons Lake City the fourth Tuesday of each month for Fabric Fix-It! \nWe will have menders on site who can either offer advice on mending\, or mend textiles for you. If your project goals are out of the scope of what we can accomplish in one evening\, we will help you make a plan to carry out on your own. \nSome common fixes include: hemming\, patching small holes\, reattaching buttons\, and fixing or replacing zippers. \nWe are including a limit of two items at a time per person. If you have more items to be fixed\, feel free to bring them\, but we will prioritize fixing a few things for everyone over multple items for the same person! DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating our passion for repair\, creativity\, and community in a Halloween-themed party! Everyone is welcome. Costumes encouraged.\n\n\nThroughout the afternoon into the evening\, we’ll have a variety of fun\, festive activities planned! Below is an approximate plan for the event: \n\n2–5pm: Costume Sewing and Swap\n4–7pm: Cider Pressing\n5–6pm: Music Setup\n6–6:15pm: A word from Seattle REconomy\n6:15–9:30: Party Time (Food\, Music\, and Merriment)\n\nDetailed Plan (more details to come!): \nCostume Crafting & Swap at 2–5pm: Visit a variety of maker stations\, where you can create\, enhance\, or swap your Halloween costume(s)! There will be reclaimed materials and tools\, including light sewing supplies and fabric\, to design and build a costume from scratch\, plus expert sewists to help make your dreams a reality. Some materials will be for sale through our partners\, and we encourage you to bring your own. Tables will be set up throughout the space for folks who would like to work independently\, while chatting with other creatives working on their own projects. We’ll also have Menders available who can hem garments\, repair clothing\, and attach embellishments. \nCider Pressing at 4–7: We’re reserving a couple of cider presses from the tool libraries\, and there will be a couple of stations set up for folks to press apples. While we’re connecting with some local produce stands and grocers for apples\, bringing your own is highly encouraged. This activity may take place outside under canopies. \nShifting to Music and Dance\, Guest Arrival\, and Final Setup at 5–6pm: Come in\, explore the space\, and talk with fellow community members as we set up the space for the rest of the night. The band will be getting ready\, and we’ll be putting out more refreshments and food. Folks will still have some dedicated space to continue working on their costumes. \nWelcome from Seattle REconomy around 6pm: Gage Glupker\, the Program Manager of Reuse Lake City\, alongside Josh Epstein\, the Executive Director of Seattle REconomy\, the operator of the space\, will be formally welcoming everyone into the space and introducing folks to our partners and ongoing activities. At this point\, everything for the evening festivities will be just about set up! \nHalloween Hootenanny Activity Areas at 6–7:30pm: It’s time to mingle\, dance\, and eat some food! Cascade Cody & the Washington Apples will be playing live music throughout the evening\, and there will be a dedicated dance space for those who want to throw down on the proper Hootenanny! Seattle ReCreative will continue offering free-form costume-making space and related materials.
