DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use our 3D printers. 3D Printer Orientation is necessary to use our in-house Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers.\n\n\nLearn how to find\, prepare\, and print 3D models on our Prusa MK3S+ 3D printers! No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. Please note that CAD for 3D Printing class is NOT a 3D printer orientation class and will not cover how to use our in-house 3D printers. These classes will not have any content overlap. If you are interested in taking both\, you can take them in either order. \nTaking the 3D Printer Orientation is required to use our in-house printers. You must also be a member of NE Seattle Tool Library or Shoreline Tool Library to take this class. Become a member here! \nWhile this instance is at the Shoreline Tool Library\, we also have 3D Printer Orientations at the NE Seattle Tool Library\, and completing one at either location gives members access to all of our tool library 3D printers. You may view our full list of upcoming 3D Printer Orientations here. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. If cost is a concern\, we encourage you to contact us at info@seattlereconomy.org to discuss options. \nChildren are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis\, either as a student or as an observer. If you would like your child to attend a class with you\, please email info@seattlereconomy.orgwith their age and experience. Let us know if they will be a student or an observer\, the name and date of the class\, and we will determine if it is appropriate. \nACCESSIBILITY: \n\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. The restroom is ADA compliant.\nNon-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events\, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.\nPlease contact us with any accessibility notes or requests.\n\nGETTING THERE: \n\nBy transit: Served by King County Metro bus RapidRide E Line on Aurora Ave N and N 165th.\nBy bike: The venue is located one block west of the Interurban Trail. SUMMARY:Learn to Sew Reusable Cloth Pads for Menstruation and Incontinence @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn about reusable cloth pads as you use basic sewing skills to create them. Materials provided. Advanced beginner sewing skills required.\n\n\nStudents will learn to sew reusable cloth pads for menstruation and/or incontinence using a selection of easy-to-find fabrics\, and quickly learn how the world of cloth pads is ahead of commercial pads in terms of customization and leak protection. \nThe benefits of cloth pads are endless. They are a great beginner project to grow sewing skills and confidence. They provide reduced skin irritation\, increased comfort\, total control over the materials (no plastic)\, better breathability\, customized absorption and leak protection\, save plastic from landfills\, and provide cost savings over time. Cloth pads make great gifts and donations to charities as well. \nThis class will cover questions such as: \n\nAre reusable cloth pads sanitary?\nAre they more prone to leaks than disposable?\nHow fast do they absorb?\nHow do I wash them?\nWhat about stains?\nWhat about super heavy flows?\n\nStudents will get an overview of the different layers in cloth pads and recommendations for best options based on needs\, be provided with enough supplies to make at least two reusable pads from the available patterns\, learn and get support for the entire process\, and be provided a list of recommended materials (where to find them and how to select the right ones while also offering options for a range of budgets). All supplies and tools are provided by Seattle REconomy. \nThis class will be taught in an inclusive\, judgment-free environment. There will be direct language around sensitive topics like anatomy\, menstruation\, and other aspects of being human. \nPrerequisites: This class is for students who have basic experience using a sewing machine. All students must be able to thread a machine and bobbin without guidance\, be able to sew straight seams\, be confident enough to try curved seams\, know how to backstitch\, and have completed at least two projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Kimberly Swenson: Kimberly has been sewing for 30+ years. It all started when her mother gave her a threaded needle and some scrap fabric when she was six years old; Kimberly would sit in the corner at her work\, mesmerized by how thread could combine two pieces of fabric. She learned how to sew on a machine when she was eight\, then learned the “right” way to sew in Home Economics. Since then\, she’s sewn everything from handbags\, quilts\, a wedding dress\, garments\, and accessories. She loves the creative problem-solving in sewing and the satisfaction of figuring out a challenging project. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. We’ll also have Menders available who can hem garments\, repair clothing\, and attach embellishments. \nCider Pressing at 4–7: We’re reserving a couple of cider presses from the tool libraries\, and there will be a couple of stations set up for folks to press apples. While we’re connecting with some local produce stands and grocers for apples\, bringing your own is highly encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of knitting so you can start you first project and get hands-on support in the second session. Some materials required.\n\n\nThis two-session class will give you the skills and confidence to start your first knitting project. \nThe first session (11/7) will cover the basic steps of knitting. This includes the tools you need\, casting on stitches\, making both knit and purl stitches\, and binding off stitches. The first session will include a discussion of beginner projects\, how to read a pattern\, and how to pick out materials for a project. The focus of the first session is on practicing the skills rather than starting a project. \nThe second session (11/14) will be optional and structured more like office hours. Students can come and work on projects together\, and the instructor will be on hand to provide support. This could include working on an in-progress project\, getting help applying the skills from the first class to a specific project\, or picking out the pattern for a first project. \nStudents need to bring: Students need to bring: Two double-pointed needles size 7-9 and worsted-weight (medium-thick) yarn. Note that if students already have other needle sizes and yarn weights\, they will work and buying more is not necessary. \nBelow are the dates for each part of the class. She currently knits socks\, scarves\, hats\, mittens\, sweaters\, and pot holders. She considers herself mostly a self-taught knitter. Her aunt taught her the basics (like what she is proposing in this class) when she was young and she built up her knitting skills from books\, blogs\, and YouTube videos. Sarah wants to show others how to use these resources to support their knitting journey. She taught her first class for us in April\, and it sold out quickly.
