Bring your own bike and learn from hands-on experience by addressing your specific needs\, such as gear\, brake\, and bearing adjustments\, wheel truing\, and bike fit. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. Growing up in his father’s bike shop\, Russ literally has 60+ years of experience. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series (S4) are offered at a reduced rate. SUMMARY:Simple Wood Furniture Repair for Beginners (S4) @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Gain the skills and confidence required to repair and refresh small wooden furniture. Some materials required. No experience needed. 18+.\n\n\nLearn how to repair and refresh small wooden furniture pieces in this beginner-friendly\, hands-on workshop. Participants will practice basic repair skills\, including identifying loose joints\, safely taking pieces apart\, re-gluing and clamping\, replacing small damaged parts\, sanding rough areas\, and doing simple finish touch-ups. \nThis class focuses on everyday tools like drills\, drivers\, circular (or miter) saws\, orbital sanders\, clamps\, and sanding blocks. Safety will be covered first\, including eye protection\, dust management\, safe tool handling\, and proper clamping. \nBy the end of class\, participants will leave with a repaired item of their own and the confidence to tackle simple furniture repairs at home. No prior woodworking experience is needed. \nImportant Notes: \n\nPlease bring one small-to-medium wooden item to repair\, such as a chair\, small table\, nightstand\, or frame.\nParticipants must wear closed-toe shoes\, bring an N-95 mask\, and be 18 or older.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Tiffany Lamoreaux: Tiffany has been doing “furniture flipping” for about 5 years now. She is passionate about keeping things out of the landfill\, so if she sees a piece of furniture on the side of the road\, she will often take it home and give it a second life. Most furniture needs minimal repair but lots of TLC. Sometimes Tiffany does complete redesign work\, sometimes she does a straight restoration\, but always she brings new life to a piece of furniture that would otherwise be tossed away. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series (S4) are offered at a reduced rate. Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? SUMMARY:Tool School for Women+: Power Saws @ STL
DESCRIPTION:A beginner class introducing you to a variety of saws through instruction and hands-on practice. Safety materials required. Women+ space.\n\n\nLynette will lead this class on commonly used power saws\, including jig\, circular\, and miter/chop. This is a beginner class geared toward those who have no or very little experience using these tools. \nAttendees will learn about saw anatomy and how to choose the correct saw for various tasks\, while emphasizing safety and workspace setup. Attendees will have a chance to handle each type of saw and practice some basic cuts. \nNOTE: Students must provide their own hearing protection\, safety glasses\, and N-95 dust mask. While saws will be available\, students who have their own jig or circular saws are welcome to bring them along.  \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. If this class isn’t the right fit for you\, we also offer many workshops that are open to everyone. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our Monthly Volunteer Training where you’ll learn new skills and meet other awesome volunteers!\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can get involved with the community and help out at the Shoreline Tool Library. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer\, you haven’t been back in a while\, or you’re brand new\, everyone is welcome!  \nWe’ll cover everything you need to know to check in and out tools\, assist members\, and answer all of your questions. We’ll also go over other ways to volunteer\, including beautification\, outreach\, inventory\, fixing tools\, and steering committees. DESCRIPTION:Learn about reusable cloth pads as you use basic sewing skills to create them. Materials provided. Advanced beginner sewing skills required.\n\n\nStudents will learn to sew reusable cloth pads for menstruation and/or incontinence using a selection of easy-to-find fabrics\, and quickly learn how the world of cloth pads is ahead of commercial pads in terms of customizations and leak protection. The benefits of cloth pads are endless. \nThis project will help you grow existing sewing skills and confidence (details on prerequisites below). They provide reduced skin irritation\, increased comfort\, total control over the materials (no plastic)\, better breathability\, customized absorption and leak protection\, save plastic from landfills\, and provide cost savings over time. Cloth pads make great gifts and donations to charities as well. \nThis class will cover questions such as: \n\nAre reusable cloth pads sanitary?\nAre they more prone to leaks than disposable options?\nHow fast do they absorb?\nHow do I wash them?\nWhat about stains?\nWhat about super-heavy flows?\n\nStudents will get an overview of the different layers in cloth pads and recommendations for best options based on needs\, be provided with enough supplies to make at least two reusable pads from the available patterns\, learn and get support for the entire process\, and be provided a list of recommended materials (where to find them and how to select the right ones while also offering options for a range of budgets). \nThis class will be taught in an inclusive\, judgment-free environment. There will be direct language around sensitive topics\, like anatomy\, menstruation\, and other aspects of being human. \nPrerequisites: This class is for students who have basic experience using a sewing machine. All students must already be able to thread a machine and bobbin without guidance\, be able to sew straight seams\, understand basic seam allowance\, backstitching\, and simple construction\, and have completed simple projects using a sewing machine. \nAbout the instructor\, Kimberly Swenson: Kimberly has been sewing for 30+ years. It all started when her mother gave her a threaded needle and some scrap fabric when she was six years old; Kimberly would sit in the corner at her work\, mesmerized by how thread could combine two pieces of fabric. She learned how to sew on a machine when she was eight\, then learned the “right” way to sew in Home Economics. Since then\, she’s sewn everything from handbags\, quilts\, a wedding dress\, garments\, and accessories. In this class\, students will review the basics of how their homes “work”\, from identifying critical components to how to reduce a person’s exposure. Low-cost or no-cost solutions will be discussed\, and simple tools will be demonstrated that anyone can build. \nAbout the instructor\, Aileen Gagney: Aileen is an architect by trade\, a former general contractor\, home inspector\, and pest inspector. She is also a Healthy Home Specialist and is Green-Advantage Certified. She has been teaching people about their homes for over 40 years. She spent 15 years as the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist Program and\, for the past 12\, as the Senior Technical Advisor and Trainer for a Tribal Healthy Homes non-profit. DESCRIPTION:Bring your bike to class with you and learn how to repair a flat tire\, from start to finish\, in this beginner-friendly class. Women+ space.\n\n\nAre you interested in learning how to repair a flat tire\, an essential skill for all cyclists? Our beginner-friendly Fix-A-Flat class will teach you everything from removing the tire\, to patching the tube\, to pumping the tire back up and making sure it’s safe to get back on your bike. \nNo experience needed\, and you’ll leave the class with the skills to handle flat tires confidently. This class applies to tires with innertubes (i.e. not “tubeless”). Students should bring a bicycle to the class. \nAbout the instructor\, Nancy Helm: Nancy is an avid cyclist with a passion for teaching others not only how to ride a bicycle\, but also how to maintain and repair their bicycles. She brings to this class over ten years teaching basic bicycle maintenance at Cascade Bicycle Club\, including four years teaching women and non-binary classes. She’s also taught “How to Buy a Used Bicycle” at the Shoreline Tool Library. She’s a graduate of the United Bicycle Institute’s 40-hour bicycle maintenance course. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online\, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer\, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here\, but it is not required. \nThis class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling\, check out our other class—CAD for 3D Printing. Please note that CAD for 3D Printing class is NOT a 3D printer orientation class and will not cover how to use our in-house 3D printers. These classes will not have any content overlap. Women+ Space.\n\n\nDesigned as a supportive and welcoming environment\, this two-part class is ideal for students who are new to building but ready to take the next step. Whether you’ve taken Tool School for Women+: Power Saws and/or Drills & Drivers\, Bits & Bobs\, or have equivalent experience\, this is a great way to apply those foundational skills to a real project.  \nYou\, the student\, will move at a comfortable pace with plenty of time for questions\, shared learning\, and individualized support. Along the way\, you’ll learn a simple joinery technique\, glue up boards to create a panel\, and practice layout skills like drawing circles on wood. \nBy the end of the course\, you’ll go home with a fully finished side table and the confidence to tackle your next build! \nWhat to Bring: \n\nYou are required to bring your own safety glasses\, hearing protection\, and N95 dust mask.\nAlthough there will be a variety of colors of stains/finishing products available\, you are encouraged to bring the stain or paint that you’d like to use on their table.\nIf you have a jigsaw\, palm sander\, or orbital sander of your own that you’d like to use\, you are welcome to bring it.\n\nPlease be sure you can make it to both of the class periods (listed below) and register only for the first date listed (June 27th): \n\nPart One: Saturday\, June 27th\, from 3–7pm at the Shoreline Tool Library\nPart Two: Sunday\, June 28th\, from 10am–12pm at the Shoreline Tool Library\n\nAbout the instructor\, Lynette Wacholz: Lynette is nearly retired from a career in healthcare. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle.
