We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Jennifer Yasis and Cinthia Marisol: Jen has been sewing for years\, from simple garments\, quilts\, bags\, pillows and accessories from patterns or reconstructing what she sees. She enjoys sharing what she’s learned to help others build confidence in their skills in a supportive\, encouraging environment. Cinthia Marisol\, (they/elle)\, is a two spirit queer writer and interdisciplinary artist. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of hand mending\, including how to patch holes. Start with a demo\, then practice on your own item. SUMMARY:Crochet an Upcycled Origami Bag
DESCRIPTION:Turn old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or plastic bags into a crocheted origami bag! 8mm hooks are provided\, but bag material is required.\n\n\nLearn how to crochet a beginner-friendly origami bag using old clothing\, sheets\, towels\, or even plastic bags! In the first part of the class\, students will explore making “yarn” out of repurposed materials. Students will then use the yarn they created to crochet a cute origami bag. This is a perfect project for beginners. \nNote: Students should bring old t-shirts\, sheets\, towels\, or at least 3 plastic grocery bags. 8mm crochet hooks will be provided. \nAbout the instructor\, Galaxy Salo: Galaxy has a wide range of experience with yarn-centric arts. SUMMARY:Learn to Sew Reusable Cloth Pads for Menstruation and Incontinence @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn about reusable cloth pads as you use basic sewing skills to create them. Materials provided. Advanced beginner sewing skills required.\n\n\nStudents will learn to sew reusable cloth pads for menstruation and/or incontinence using a selection of easy-to-find fabrics\, and quickly learn how the world of cloth pads is ahead of commercial pads in terms of customizations and leak protection. The benefits of cloth pads are endless. \nThis project will help you grow existing sewing skills and confidence (details on prerequisites below). They provide reduced skin irritation\, increased comfort\, total control over the materials (no plastic)\, better breathability\, customized absorption and leak protection\, save plastic from landfills\, and provide cost savings over time. Cloth pads make great gifts and donations to charities as well. \nThis class will cover questions such as: \n\nAre reusable cloth pads sanitary?\nAre they more prone to leaks than disposable options?\nHow fast do they absorb?\nHow do I wash them?\nWhat about stains?\nWhat about super-heavy flows?\n\nStudents will get an overview of the different layers in cloth pads and recommendations for best options based on needs\, be provided with enough supplies to make at least two reusable pads from the available patterns\, learn and get support for the entire process\, and be provided a list of recommended materials (where to find them and how to select the right ones while also offering options for a range of budgets). \nThis class will be taught in an inclusive\, judgment-free environment. There will be direct language around sensitive topics\, like anatomy\, menstruation\, and other aspects of being human. \nPrerequisites: This class is for students who have basic experience using a sewing machine. All students must already be able to thread a machine and bobbin without guidance\, be able to sew straight seams\, understand basic seam allowance\, backstitching\, and simple construction\, and have completed simple projects using a sewing machine. \nAbout the instructor\, Kimberly Swenson: Kimberly has been sewing for 30+ years. It all started when her mother gave her a threaded needle and some scrap fabric when she was six years old; Kimberly would sit in the corner at her work\, mesmerized by how thread could combine two pieces of fabric. She learned how to sew on a machine when she was eight\, then learned the “right” way to sew in Home Economics. Since then\, she’s sewn everything from handbags\, quilts\, a wedding dress\, garments\, and accessories. Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? DESCRIPTION:Bring by your broken household items for a night of fixing and community building at the Shoreline Tool Library!\n\n\nIt’s time to start collecting all those items around the house that need to be fixed but you don’t know how. We are hosting a repair night at the Shoreline Tool Library. We will help you fix and learn to fix your broken tools\, lamps\, toys\, furniture\, appliances\, and any other broken items that you can carry in on your own. We encourage you to help as much as you can and enjoy the community of reuse! \nIf you are excited about fixing and want to help out with this event or other fixing opportunities we are looking for more fixers.
