Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? SUMMARY:Simple Wood Furniture Repair for Beginners (S4) @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Gain the skills and confidence required to repair and refresh small wooden furniture. Some materials required. No experience needed. 18+.\n\n\nLearn how to repair and refresh small wooden furniture pieces in this beginner-friendly\, hands-on workshop. Participants will practice basic repair skills\, including identifying loose joints\, safely taking pieces apart\, re-gluing and clamping\, replacing small damaged parts\, sanding rough areas\, and doing simple finish touch-ups. \nThis class focuses on everyday tools like drills\, drivers\, circular (or miter) saws\, orbital sanders\, clamps\, and sanding blocks. Safety will be covered first\, including eye protection\, dust management\, safe tool handling\, and proper clamping. \nBy the end of class\, participants will leave with a repaired item of their own and the confidence to tackle simple furniture repairs at home. No prior woodworking experience is needed. \nImportant Notes: \n\nPlease bring one small-to-medium wooden item to repair\, such as a chair\, small table\, nightstand\, or frame.\nParticipants must wear closed-toe shoes\, bring an N-95 mask\, and be 18 or older.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Tiffany Lamoreaux: Tiffany has been doing “furniture flipping” for about 5 years now. She is passionate about keeping things out of the landfill\, so if she sees a piece of furniture on the side of the road\, she will often take it home and give it a second life. Most furniture needs minimal repair but lots of TLC. Sometimes Tiffany does complete redesign work\, sometimes she does a straight restoration\, but always she brings new life to a piece of furniture that would otherwise be tossed away. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series (S4) are offered at a reduced rate. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. Some materials suggested.\n\n\nThere’s always something you want to put on a wall. Picture frames\, lights\, mirrors\, coat racks\, hat racks\, hooks\, etc. Lights and hooks often get put on ceilings; picture frames and coat racks\, not so much. But walls are not all the same. There’s wood and drywall\, plaster and lath\, brick\, concrete\, and\, rarely\, straw. \nHow do you attach a light to a ceiling? A coat rack to drywall? Or brick? Or straw? How do you repair an “Oopsy!” when your hanging effort needs a repair? Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking for a refresher\, this workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of a standard home sewing machine. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things. Joslyn learned to sew in Home Ec (economics) class in high school back when they taught such a thing.. the 1970s! She’s stock piled more fabric than she’ll ever be able to use; fabric stores are one of her happy places! \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries.
