SUMMARY:Simple Wood Furniture Repair for Beginners (S4) @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Gain the skills and confidence required to repair and refresh small wooden furniture. Some materials required. No experience needed. 18+.\n\n\nLearn how to repair and refresh small wooden furniture pieces in this beginner-friendly\, hands-on workshop. Participants will practice basic repair skills\, including identifying loose joints\, safely taking pieces apart\, re-gluing and clamping\, replacing small damaged parts\, sanding rough areas\, and doing simple finish touch-ups. \nThis class focuses on everyday tools like drills\, drivers\, circular (or miter) saws\, orbital sanders\, clamps\, and sanding blocks. Safety will be covered first\, including eye protection\, dust management\, safe tool handling\, and proper clamping. \nBy the end of class\, participants will leave with a repaired item of their own and the confidence to tackle simple furniture repairs at home. No prior woodworking experience is needed. \nImportant Notes: \n\nPlease bring one small-to-medium wooden item to repair\, such as a chair\, small table\, nightstand\, or frame.\nParticipants must wear closed-toe shoes\, bring an N-95 mask\, and be 18 or older.\n\nAbout the instructor\, Tiffany Lamoreaux: Tiffany has been doing “furniture flipping” for about 5 years now. She is passionate about keeping things out of the landfill\, so if she sees a piece of furniture on the side of the road\, she will often take it home and give it a second life. Most furniture needs minimal repair but lots of TLC. Sometimes Tiffany does complete redesign work\, sometimes she does a straight restoration\, but always she brings new life to a piece of furniture that would otherwise be tossed away. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series (S4) are offered at a reduced rate. Are you tired of spending too much money on Halloween costumes that your kids grow out of the next year? Are you interested in sustainable reuse of clothing? \nIf the answer to any of these is “Yes!”\, then please join us at the Shoreline Tool Library’s Winter Clothing and Halloween Costume Swap on September 27! \nThis event is free\, but because of capacity restraints\, we must limit the swap itself to 50 people. DESCRIPTION:This is a hands-on introduction to drills and drivers\, covering parts\, bits\, fasteners\, and safety. Safety glasses needed. Women+ space.\n\n\nThis class is geared toward absolute beginners or those who have very little experience using electric drills or impact drivers. \nAttendees will learn about drill and driver anatomy\, how to choose the correct drill or driver bit\, and choose the right fastener for common projects while emphasizing safety and workspace set up. There will be a hands-on part of this class\, where students will have a chance to handle these tools and practice drilling and driving into different materials. Students will also be introduced to drill guides and drill presses. \nStudents are required to bring their own safety glasses. Students are welcome to bring their own drill/driver and/or impact driver\, though there will be some on hand to use. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. These classes provide a supportive environment to ask questions\, learn new skills\, and build confidence using tools\, especially for those who may not have had many opportunities to work with them before. Next\, the class will work its way through the home and the areas of greatest concern – the kitchen and bathroom. \nIf time allows\, there will also be a discussion of heating/cooling systems\, basic plumbing and electrical\, etc. \nWomen+ classes are intended for women\, including cisgender and transgender women\, as well as transgender men and nonbinary people who feel comfortable learning in a space focused on women’s experiences. She is also a Healthy Home Specialist and is Green-Advantage Certified. She has been teaching people about their homes for over 40 years. She spent 15 years as the Director of the Master Home Environmentalist Program and\, for the past 12\, as the Senior Technical Advisor and Trainer for a Tribal Healthy Homes non-profit. She helps people understand how their homes work by providing simple\, effective advice and solutions to make homes safe\, comfortable\, healthy\, and energy efficient. We’ll use the Shoreline Tool Library’s sewing machines to explore questions like… \n\nHow do sewing machines work?\nWhen should I use each stitch?\nWhat’s a bobbin and how do I thread it?\nWhy do all the parts have funny names?\nWhat’s the deal with the tension?\nIs this thing I heard about sewing a rule or a guideline?\nHow soon can I make my dream project?\nAnd so much more!\n\nYou’ll come away with an understanding of machine sewing best practices\, a stitch sampler\, a PDF with all the information we cover in class\, and the confidence to start tackling some projects. \nAbout the instructor\, Ruth Tomandl and Joslyn Slaughter: Ruth has been machine sewing for 25 years and enjoy mending\, quilting\, and making useful things.
