SUMMARY:Sew a Waxed Canvas Tool Roll @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn a variety of sewing skills to create a unique tool roll for your needs. Some intermediate sewing skills and materials required.\n\n\nWhat a wonderful gift to give yourself or a loved one! Learn how to make a waxed canvas tool roll in this three-hour class. You will cut fabric from a provided pattern with a cutting mat and rotary cutter\, learn how to sew thick/stiff fabric\, install grommets or snaps\, and learn how to customize the pattern for future tool rolls. \nYour tool roll can accommodate different types of tools\, such as small hand tools\, sewing tools\, bicycling tools\, crochet hooks\, knitting needles\, art supplies\, pens\, notebooks\, mending supplies\, etc. We will start with a basic pattern that you can adjust to fit the tools you want to organize and carry with you. \nPlan on arriving 5-10 minutes early to set up your machine. You’re welcome to bring your own machine\, but the instructor cannot take time from the class to assist with your machine if you bring it from home. \nClass Prerequisites: \n\nThe skill level for this class is advanced beginner or intermediate machine sewers. In order to take this class\, the instructor requires that you already be able to confidently thread a machine\, wind a bobbin\, adjust stitch lengths\, sew straight\, change sewing feet\, and back tack.\nStudents should bring the tools (wood carving tools\, knitting needles\, crochet hooks\, art supplies\, pens\, pencils\, etc.) they’d like to put into the tool roll. SUMMARY:Learn to Make a Braided Wool Candy Cane @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Use some of the basic skills required to make a braided wool rug to create a candy cane instead! All materials provided for one candy cane.\n\n\nLearn to make a very simple braided wool candy cane that incorporates a few of the basic skills and terminology involved in making a round braided rug. In about 15 minutes\, with materials that have been prepared and are ready to braid\, you can create an attractive and soft holiday decoration or gift. \nMaterials are from a variety of repurposed wool garments in white\, green\, red\, and some plaids. Materials for one candy cane will be provided with the class fee. Additional materials may be purchased from the instructor during class\, with fees supporting a donation to the Edmonds Food Bank. \nAbout the instructor\, Margaret Elwood: Margaret has been making braided rugs for decades and has been teaching for 5 years. She recently taught a popular braided wool rug class at the Shoreline Tool Library. SUMMARY:Learn the Basics of Needle Felting and Make a Holiday Ornament @ STL
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the basic supplies and tools of needle felting (AKA roving)\, while creating a felted acorn to decorate your home this winter.\n\n\nIn this class\, you will learn the basics of needle felting with wool. This will include an overview of setup\, materials\, and tools\, along with some tips and tricks to make getting started easier. Students will quickly get into trying out the needle felting by making a simple felted acorn\, a lovely little holiday ornament. \nHand dexterity is the primary mobility consideration\, due the requirement of repetitive and precise movements. Please be aware that in working with needles\, you may poke yourself in the process of learning. DESCRIPTION:John\, the owner of Renaissance Tree Care\, will teach you the basics of how to take care of a range of fruit trees. Some materials required.\n\n\nJohn will facilitate and lead a discussion about basic fruit tree biology and fruit tree structure\, and why we prune or don’t prune based on goals and the species of tree or shrub. He will demonstrate some basic fruit tree pruning techniques and call out things to avoid that might cause damage to fruit trees while pruning. \nClass supplies to be provided by students: \n\nStudents must provide their own safety glasses and gloves.\nThey are welcome to bring their own hand saws\, pruners\, and loppers to learn some tricks of the trade in using them.\n\nAbout the instructor\, John Zehren: John brings to this class his background in teaching plant amnesty pruning classes. He has owned and operated Renaissance Tree Care for over 35 years and has taught his employees everything they need to know for tree care. John has a four-year degree in urban forestry from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and an Arborist credential from the International Society of Arboriculture. \nAll classes in Seattle REconomy’s Shoreline Sustainable Skill Series are offered at a reduced rate. Have you been meaning to set aside time for your latest alteration\, but need some motivation? Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? Learn how to transform simple squares of fabric into beautifully finished cloth napkins or gift wrapping cloths with even hems and mitered corners. \nWhile this is a beginner class\, the instructor requires that students can already sew a straight line\, backstitch\, and understand basic sewing machine terminology. \nMaterials Required: Prior to class\, each student should decide if they plan to make either wrapping cloths or cloth napkins. There are general materials requirements\, along with ones specific to what you plan on creating. \nAll students must bring: \n\nNON-STRETCH woven fabric\, measuring at least 18×18” inches per napkin or 16×16” per wrap\, washed and dried. (Example: 1 ¼ yard of continuous fabric will make four 18×18” hemmed cloths. This is a special Machine Sewing 101 class where you’ll learn basic machine sewing skills\, and you’ll also make a potholder. This will be a beginner-friendly class to learn the basics of machine sewing where you get the opportunity to make a potholder and take it home. \nNo previous sewing machine experience is required. All tools and supplies will be provided by Seattle REconomy. \nAbout the instructor\, Ava: Former Shoreline Tool Library Coordinator Ava Lim learned sewing from her mother\, who was a sewing instructor. Ava then moved on to teaching classes herself at the makerspaces at the University of Washington.
