No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover the basic aspects of parametric modeling\, including creating fully constrained sketches and turning sketches into bodies. Although this class is geared toward learning CAD specifically for 3D Printing\, this is NOT a 3D Printing Orientation class and will NOT cover how to use our in-house printers. \nYou are encouraged to bring your own laptop and mouse to the class and download Prusa Slicer and create an onshape account\, but it is not required. \nAlthough this class is geared toward learning CAD specifically for 3D Printing\, this is NOT a 3D Printing Orientation class and will NOT cover how to use our in-house printers. DESCRIPTION:Work with a bike shack volunteer to learn how to tune up your bicycle!\n\n\nSpend an evening at the Shoreline Tool Library learning the basics of maintaining your bike. Bring your own bike and learn from hands-on experience by addressing your specific needs\, such as gear\, brake\, and bearing adjustments\, wheel truing and bike fit. You’ll also gain a better understanding of common noises and their causes and solutions. All in service to making your ride experience better and helping your bike last longer. \nAbout the Instructor\, Russ Steele: \nBasic Bike Maintenance is taught by Bike Shack volunteer Russ Steele\, former owner/manager of Wedgwood Cycle. SUMMARY:Learn the Basics of Needle Felting and Make a Holiday Ornament
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the basic supplies and tools of needle felting (AKA roving) while creating a felted acorn to decorate your home this winter.\n\n\nIn this class\, you will learn the basics of needle felting with wool. This will include an overview of setup\, materials\, and tools – along with some tips and tricks to make getting started easier. We’ll quickly get into trying out the needle felting by making a simple felted acorn\, a lovely little holiday ornament! \nThis class is for absolute beginners\, no experience necessary. All tools and materials provided\, but below is a list of the materials we will be using if you’d like to purhcase and learn with your own. Come mend with us! \nOur Community Threads mending and sewing circle is a monthly event for anyone to work on their textile projects. Any textile craft is welcome! Honestly\, any craft is welcome\, but we will only be providing sewing supplies (at least at first). There will be sewing machines\, fabric\, thread and community\, as well as hot tea. \nThis will not be a class format\, while there will be experienced menders present to offer advice and counsel\, this is intended as a co-working space. \nCan’t make it to this one? Join the Shoreline Tool Library on November 9th for our free Stay Warm and Dry Clothing Swap! \nClean and gently-used (coats\, sweaters\, jackets\, hats\, scarves\, gloves\, boots and raingear) for all ages are welcome and appreciated. There will be two restrooms open for trying on clothes. \nWe have limited capacity\, so please RSVP if you plan on attending the Clothing Swap! If you would only like to donate\, you do not need to RSVP for this event. \nHow to donate: All donated clothes should be dropped off at the Shoreline Tool Library on November 9 betwen 1–2pm. You will cut fabrics from a provided pattern with a cutting mat and rotary cutter\, learn how to sew thick/stiff fabric\, become a pro at installing grommets or snaps\, and learn how to customize the pattern for future tool rolls. \nYour tool roll can accommodate different types of tools\, such as small hand tools\, sewing tools\, bicycling tools\, crochet hooks\, knitting needles\, art supplies\, pens\, notebook\, mending supplies\, etc. We will start with a basic pattern that you can adjust to fit the tools you want to organize and carry with you.All supplies provided. \nThe skill level for this class is advanced beginner or intermediate sewists. In order to take this class\, the instructors require that you already be able to confidently thread a machine\, wind a bobbin\, adjust stitch lengths\, sew straight\, change sewing feet and back tack. \nPlan on arriving 5-10 minutes early to set up your machine. DESCRIPTION:Learn winterizing tips\, soil care\, season extension\, and seed saving for year-round health.\n\n\nPut your garden to bed but not to sleep! Preparing the garden for winter\, or winterizing the garden\, is an important part of growing a healthy garden all year round! Learn different methods for covering your garden beds to keep your soil healthy including using mulches\, cover crops\, and physical barriers. We will also discuss season extension methods and seed saving basics. \nAbout the instructor\, Marni Swart: Marni Swart is a certified sustainable urban agriculturist\, garden coach\, edible garden/Permaculture designer\, nursery woman\, and owner of Growing Roots Together. Marni’s passion is teaching people how to sustainably grow more of their own food and medicine as a way of building connections with nature and within communities. She has been teaching sustainable urban agriculture for over 10 years and to many different groups including libraries\, online classes\, and garden clubs. SUMMARY:Intro to Table Saws
DESCRIPTION:Table saws are extremely useful tools\, so let’s review basic safety and use to give you the knowledge to operate them with confidence.\n\n\nThis class is for people who want to use a table saw but are apprehensive about safety. There’s a good reason for this apprehension\, as the table saw is one of the most dangerous tools in a shop; but it’s also one of the most useful. This class will cover both the safety basics and the first steps in actually using the saw to turn a piece of lumber into a piece of wood that you want; ripping\, cross-cutting\, etc. It is NOT to teach people how to make one thing or another\, but rather to give them the skills to use the table saw confidently and safely. \nAbout the instructor\, Geoff Poor: Geoff is Shoreline Tool Library volunteer and has instructed many people in the principles of safe and productive table saw usage. He is a retired educator who spent 27 years rehabbing an 1875 house in western New York. Since 2018 he has operated a part-time handyman business\, and uses table saws regularly in his handyman work. \nOur sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy\, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income. \nChildren are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis\, either as a student or as an observer.
