Bike Shack Brief – 7/18/25

Aakanksha participating in the Seattle to Portland Bike ride. Greenery and a barn are in the background.

Summer is in full swing here at the Bike Shack! The sun is out, everyone is biking, and the vibes are UP. If you are trying to dust off your bike for the summer, need a tune-up after your last ride, or just need a new bike altogether, come stop by! We are churning through repairs as fast as we can, but it can get really busy this time of year, so please be understanding with our volunteers and expect a bit of a wait if you need some help with your bike.

BIKE SALE

If you have been to the Shoreline Tool Library recently, you may have noticed the huge amount of bikes amassed in the Bike Shack (see below for an idea). We just keep finding so many great bikes that need a new home! We need to make some space up there, so we are having a bike sale tomorrow. This will be our biggest bike sale yet, and we will have all sorts of bikes. Kids bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, single speeds, even beach cruisers. If you are looking for your first or tenth bike, come by tomorrow from 10am–3pm. Be aware that we tend to get through bikes quickly at these, so be sure to show up early for the best selection!

AAKANKSHA COMPLETES SEATTLE TO PORTLAND ON BIKE SHACK BIKE

I wanted to give a shoutout to a fellow Tool Library volunteer (and, also, my wife!) Aakanksha Sinha, who completed the Seattle to Portland bike ride last weekend on a bike that she picked up from the Bike Shack only a few weeks ago. While she was training for the STP this spring, she realized that the bike she was riding on was beginning to behave strangely, and after close inspection, she realized that her fork was bent (among other problems). In a last-minute decision, and to prevent upsetting her training schedule, she simply decided to pick up a used bike from the Bike Shack and start using it. The frame is a 90’s Specialized Hardrock with an absolutely CLASSIC teal and purple paint job. It took her a few days to dial in the fit of the bike, but she made it work and rode it all 210 miles to Portland! And may I say, she got quite a few compliments on the bike. Congrats to Aakanksha and to all other riders who participated in this year’s STP!

If you also rode the STP on one of our bikes, or if you took them on some other adventure, send us an email about it! We would love to feature your story here!

NEW WORKBENCH

We were gifted a new workbench setup for the Shoreline Bike Shack (thank you, Mike Fancher!). Our previous workbench was secretly just an old door with sound 2x4s nailed to it that André and I threw together one evening so that we had at least something resembling a table. I am a bit sad to see the old workbench go, but I no longer feel a bit of fear every time I rest something heavy on the workbench! Here are some before and after photos:

Thank you all again for your continued support, and I hope to see everyone outside enjoying the sun this summer!

Ryan
