Perfect for the holidays, either for you to use or to give as a gift. Learn how to transform simple squares of fabric into beautifully finished cloth napkins or gift wrapping cloths with even hems and mitered corners.

While this is a beginner class, the instructor requires that students can already sew a straight line, backstitch, and understand basic sewing machine terminology.

Materials Required: Prior to class, each student should decide if they plan to make either wrapping cloths or cloth napkins. There are general materials requirements, along with ones specific to what you plan on creating.

All students must bring:

• NON-STRETCH woven fabric, measuring at least 18×18” inches per napkin or 16×16” per wrap, washed and dried. (Example: 1 ¼ yard of continuous fabric will make four 18×18” hemmed cloths. A size L women’s boxy top will probably make two.)
• All-purpose thread to match the color of your fabric (optional)
• Hot tip: Thrift shops and Seattle ReCreative are great places to look for fabrics!

If you plan to make gift wrapping cloths:

• Lightweight fabric of any composition (cotton/ linen/ hemp will be easiest to work with)
• Sizes between 16×16” and 44×44” recommended

If you plan to make napkins:

• Midweight cotton, linen, and hemp recommended (synthetic and synthetic blends NOT recommended)
• Sizes between 21”x21” and 24×24” recommended, per napkin

About the instructor, Amelia Roberts: Amelia is one of our primary sewing instructors and brings many years of experience teaching machine sewing to adult beginners.

Our sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. • The venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. The restroom is ADA-compliant.
• Non-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events. However, attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.

GETTING THERE:

• By transit: Served by King County Metro bus RapidRide E Line on Aurora Ave N and N 165th.
• By bike: The venue is located one block west of the Interurban Trail. Shoreline Light Rail stations are each about 2 miles away. A bicycle rack is available outside the building. If the tool library is not open and space is available, students are welcome to bring their bicycles inside the building.
• Car parking: There is an asphalt parking lot that fits up to 20 cars. There is one ADA van accessible parking space with an access aisle.
