What a wonderful gift to give yourself or a loved one! Learn how to make a waxed canvas tool roll in this three-hour class. You will cut fabric from a provided pattern with a cutting mat and rotary cutter, learn how to sew thick/stiff fabric, install grommets or snaps, and learn how to customize the pattern for future tool rolls.

Your tool roll can accommodate different types of tools, such as small hand tools, sewing tools, bicycling tools, crochet hooks, knitting needles, art supplies, pens, notebooks, mending supplies, etc. We will start with a basic pattern that you can adjust to fit the tools you want to organize and carry with you.

Plan on arriving 5-10 minutes early to set up your machine. You’re welcome to bring your own machine, but the instructor cannot take time from the class to assist with your machine if you bring it from home.

Class Prerequisites:

• The skill level for this class is advanced beginner or intermediate machine sewers. In order to take this class, the instructor requires that you already be able to confidently thread a machine, wind a bobbin, adjust stitch lengths, sew straight, change sewing feet, and back tack.
• Students should bring the tools (wood carving tools, knitting needles, crochet hooks, art supplies, pens, pencils, etc.) they’d like to put into the tool roll. All class supplies will be provided.

About the instructor, Jen Yasis: Jen is a lifelong sewer and fiber professional and brings a wealth of experience with textiles to this class.

Our sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy, which operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline Tool Libraries and Reuse Commons Lake City. • The venue is wheelchair accessible and has an all-gender restroom. The restroom is ADA-compliant.
• Non-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events. However, attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.

GETTING THERE:

• By transit: Served by King County Metro bus RapidRide E Line on Aurora Ave N and N 165th.
• By bike: The venue is located one block west of the Interurban Trail. Shoreline Light Rail stations are each about 2 miles away. A bicycle rack is available outside the building. If the tool library is not open and space is available, students are welcome to bring their bicycles inside the building.
• Car parking: There is an asphalt parking lot that fits up to 20 cars. There is one ADA van accessible parking space with an access aisle.

Children are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis, either as a student or as an observer. If you would like your child to attend a class with you, please email info@seattlereconomy.org with their age and experience. Let us know if they will be a student or an observer, the name and date of the class, and we will determine if it is appropriate.
