Cultivating Your Best Crop of Tomatoes

David Johnson, who has over 40 years of gardening experience, wants to teach you everything you need to know to grow tasty tomatoes.

This class will cover everything you need to know about growing tomatoes, including the basic requirements for ripening tomatoes in the Seattle area. The class will include information on the best temperature and soil preferences for tomatoes, varieties of tomatoes, growing techniques, and pests that you might come across while growing your tomatoes.

About the instructor, David Johnson: Instructor David Johnson has over 25 years as a professional horticulturist and 40 years of vegetable gardening experience. He has taught classes for Seattle Tilth and Sustainable NE Seattle (soil management, garden planning, numerous home repair classes).

Our sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income.

ACCESSIBILITY: 

  • Much of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible.  All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. The all-gender restroom is quite small and not ADA compliant. 
  • Non-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.
  • Please contact us with any accessibility notes or requests. 

GETTING THERE:

  • By transit: Served by King County Metro bus route 372 stopping along Lake City Way NE at NE 98th St.  Route 61 stops at NE Northgate Way & 23rd Ave NE and is a ½ mile walk from the tool library.
  • By bike: There are multiple bicycle route options available to the tool library, and you are welcome to stow your bicycle inside the tool library during your visit.
  • Car parking: There is a gravel parking lot that fits about 10 cars, and an asphalt parking lot that fits 5 cars. There is no ADA accessible parking. 

Children are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis, either as a student or as an observer. If you would like your child to attend a class with you, please email info@seattlereconomy.org with their age and experience. Let us know if they will be a student or an observer, the name and date of the class, and we will determine if it is appropriate.
